We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Hess and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
There are two factors that I believe have positively impacted to success of my business. Persistence and adaptability. This last year more than ever has taught all of humanity, the need to be adaptable. Being able to adapt to the ebb and flow of things you can not always control is essential. Being persistent is also a huge factor of success. Keeping the mission in the forefront of the mind reminds us why we get up and keep working hard day after day. Stay persistent in why you keep doing what you love, and be adaptable the road that you take to keep getting there.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Wanderlotus Yoga and Wellness was created with the goal of holding a safe space for others. I am passionate about working with individuals struggling to balance their mental health when it comes to anxiety or depression. So much of the human population finds themselves in this space at one point or another in their life. I want to hold that safe space to remind these individuals that their thoughts do not define them, and to find grace and forgiveness within themself as they navigate the ups and downs of mental health. I have focused a lot of my private and small group offerings to working with women and youth. In January, I began facilitating my first monthly women’s circle which has been such a beautiful healing space for those involved. As a trauma aware yoga teacher, I work with youth boys living with mental health and addiction issues. My next endeavor is to take my offerings internationally. I have a women’s retreat in Estes Park and Costa Rica planned within the next year and am so excited to see how that journey unfolds. There have absolutely been hardships and struggles along the way. My business was a year in when Covid hit and this was by far the biggest struggle. The burden that got put on small business owners to decide how they were going to implement rules and guidelines was so tough to navigate. It felt like no matter what way you went, there were always conflicting beliefs. I chose to go with the option that would let me sleep at night. The option that felt morally right to me, politics aside. When the option came down to enforcing masks or not enforcing masks, I chose to require them in our studio. I felt that by doing this, I was holding true to my commitment of creating a safe space for all. A safe space for elderly. A safe space for immunosuppressed. A safe space for every body. In light of adaptability, we held virtual offerings and outdoor classes for those still choosing to seek other options. My goal was to create an offering that could meet everyones needs, in whatever space of comfort was needed for that individual. What I learned through this experience was how important persistence and adaptability truly are in maintaining the success of a business. So many times I considered giving up. Remembering why we are doing what we are doing is the key. I get to go to sleep everyday feeling like I have impacted someones world, and this is what makes all the hardships worth overcoming.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would absolutely start with a patio wine and boutique shopping day in Old Town. Cafe Vino for the wine, Acey Designs boutique for the shopping. A trip up the Poudre to the Shambala would be next up on the itinerary, stopping for a warm cup of hot chocolate at Glen Echo on the way down. Another day I would plan a trip up to Estes Park stopping at Blue Stone rock shop and Sweetheart Winery on the way out of Loveland. Winding the trip down with a beautiful sunset walk around Windsor Lake and a delicious dinner at the Hearth in downtown Windsor afterwards.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Two business partners deserve to be mentioned when it comes to how I have made it to where I am now. Rachel Hudson, the owner of Rocky Mountain Corrective Massage has been my biggest support through the growth of my business. She has been a listening ear when I need another business owner’s view or advice on something. She provides amazing insight on expansion and growth ideas, and she is hands down my biggest cheerleader. On days I find it hard to continue forward (which yes, every entrepreneur has those days) she is my number one fan in reminding me why I keep going. Krista Davis, owner of Holistic Yoga School, has been an amazing mentor and teacher to me since the beginning. She taught me almost everything I know when it comes to teaching yoga, and has helped me navigate bumps in the road as they have come along. She has encouraged me every step of the way.
