We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Jacobson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maggie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
A Postpartum Doula is somewhat revolutionary in America. Parents get minimal time off from work and no maternal support once the baby is delivered. This is not the case in most cultures.
For example, in Japan, there’s a tradition called satogaeri bunben, where the mother goes back to her parents’ home for several weeks after giving birth to rest and be cared for. In China, there’s zuo yue zi, or ‘sitting the month,’ where mothers follow specific practices around rest, food, and recovery for 30 to 40 days. In Nigeria, among the Igbo people, there’s a tradition called omugwo, where the maternal grandmother plays a big role in supporting the new mother. Korea has samchilil, which means ‘three weeks,’ and Mexico has la cuarentena, a 40-day period of rest and recuperation.

What’s really powerful is that across all these different places, there’s this shared understanding that postpartum recovery is essential—not optional. These practices may look different, but they’re all rooted in the same values: care, rest, and community. It’s a reminder that postpartum is a universal experience, and maybe it’s time we treated it that way here too.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Postpartum Pampering is a heartfelt extension of my lifelong commitment to nurturing women and children. With a background in preschool teaching, infant nannying, and yoga instruction, caring for others has always been at the center of my work — and my joy. In my personal life, you’ll often find me in the backyard garden, crafting herbal remedies, or experimenting with nourishing meals in the kitchen. Becoming a Postpartum Doula felt like the most natural next step.

I believe in a return to community care, especially when it comes to raising children. The early days after birth are a sacred window when mothers need just as much holding as their babies. My specialty lies in the food I prepare: deeply nourishing, inspired by traditional postpartum recipes from around the world, and designed to support uterus repair, milk supply, digestion, and hormonal balance.

Using nutrition as a first line of defense, I help new mothers feel grounded, replenished, and cared for. Holding and feeding postpartum women so that they can best hold and feed their babies is the clearest way for me to channel my passion and purpose.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love showing folks around Boulder. My tour typically starts by walking through my backyard garden and saying hello to the chickens. Afterwards we’ll walk along the trail down to the creek. Having the mountains right there is the biggest perk to me. Whoever’s in town is sure to have plenty of opportunities to get outside with me – whether it be immediately out my front door or a short drive up the canyon to get some higher altitude views.

As far as city life, we’re for sure going to hop on our bikes swing by the Heady Bauer vintage shop on Pearl to say hi to Pinner & Hammy. We’ll grab some dinner at Sherpas and then head out to one of DJ M3dium’s killer dance parties.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Kirsten Millar is a mother of beautiful twin boys who were once my students in preschool class. She has been so incredibly supportive of me and the winding trajectory of my career within the realm of family care. She’s got a gift for networking people to ought to know each other. It’s thanks to Kirsten that I’ve been connected with preschools, nanny families, and postpartum families. Word of mouth goes the farthest in this industry.
