We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Robel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thoughts behind starting my own business varied a lot leading up to it. I was raised by hard working entrepreneurs, so I was exposed to the positives and negatives in being self employed. Some of the appealing parts (freedom, flexibility, endless opportunity, etc) were extremely appealing and seemed natural for my personality and knowledge. The less appealing factors weren’t enough to change my mind or give me a reason not to, so I went for it.
What should our readers know about your business?
I do a lot of different things. I guess you could say my main thing (career-wise) is centered around various real estate components. I do property management, real estate sales, real estate leasing, Airbnb management, and real estate related bookkeeping. I really enjoy the variety and I’m thankful that I’m able to provide services in so many different areas. There are a lot of people I meet that are curious about short-term rentals, but they’ve only ever had long-term rentals, others that want to get into real estate investing but don’t know where to start or what to do once they’ve actually purchased an investment property. I can help answer questions in all of these categories, and more, which is very fun. It’s been a journey getting here, and I have much farther to go still. I dipped my toes into the Airbnb world five years ago, and learned as I went there. Then I got my real estate license and started managing rental properties, and got experience handling all of the various aspects of long term rental management. Real estate sales came next, and leasing too. Through it all, I have learned through my own mistakes, guidance from people that know more than me, and LOTS of research and study. The biggest lesson I’ve learned through it all has been: people deserve honesty and compassion. The world of real estate, especially property management, can get really emotional and tumultuous. Dealing with people’s dwellings, timelines for moving, more money than they’ve maybe ever spent, and so many other life factors usually brings a significant amount of pressure, stress, excitement, and earnest along with. I have helped someone get into a rental after a divorce, helped a young family buy their home, rented apartments to elderly folks and then a few years later – watched their family members move their things out after they pass on. I’ve sat at the closing table with investors purchasing “just another investment property” and also seen the despair of someone being forced to sell the only home they ever owned. In the same day, I can walk a family through their beautiful new dream home, and also get a call about a backed up sewer in someone else’s. There are so many facets of my career that I just never expected, and every day brings something new.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Greeley, Colorado. If I was showing my best friend around for a week, I would take them to Trail Ridge Road for breathtaking views, and the town of Lyons on the way home for antique stores and eclectic vibes. We’d visit Lory State Park nearby and go kayaking or ice fishing on Horsetooth Reservoir depending on the season, and head to Bindle Coffee in Fort Collins for some of the best coffee they’ll ever taste. Greeley has great things to fill well more than a week of time, but we’d definitely need to go to La Petite French Bakery for an authentic pastry, see a movie at The Kress old fashioned movie theater, and maybe sneak down to the speakeasy below for a 5 star cocktail. We’d definitely go to Weldwerks Brewing for an award winning brew, and have some delicious Italian food at Pellegrini’s. Houston Gardens provides a lovely place to walk and sit when the weather cooperates. We’d likely go to the Boomer House for some games and camaraderie and perhaps some fun at the Greeley Hatchet House too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father, the most hardworking AND most generous person I know.
