We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallory Munson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mallory, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly I didn’t intend to own a wedding photography business, it just kind of happened. I got a “nice” camera in my yearly twenties and my friends would ask me to take pictures of their families. This snowballed into me taking photos nearly every weekend while still working my 9-5 job as a website designer. After two years of overworking myself with essentially two jobs, my partner at the time told me he believed in my craft and the joy I bring people when capturing photos. He pushed me to quit my job and do photography full time. So I did. I then moved to Colorado shortly after quitting my job and went full time with not only family photos but full on weddings (I had only captured one wedding at that point but booked 30 weddings my first year…the hustle was real!). Now nearly 300 weddings later I am still doing my “didn’t plan on owning my business” thing and I love it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is not so much my art, but my approach and who I am as a human. My work is colorful and contrasty and doesn’t follow the latest trends, but I too am colorful and bold and very expressive. I show up on my couples wedding days as a friend. As soon as I enter their getting ready room it’s like saying hiiii to someone I have known for years, thats how I want them to feel and thats how I too want to feel. I want my couples to feel comfortable, heard and excited about their wedding day. I love to help calm peoples nerves with a laugh or sometimes bust out in dance moves. I am myself when I am shooting and people love that.

Human connection is my most favorite thing this world has to offer and I get to do that every weekend with my couples. When wedding season is over I truly miss them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well how can my best friend come to visit without taking her to a Red Rocks show. So we would 100% go there, to see an EDM show of course. The following day we would have brunch at Snooze (it may be a small chain but its delicious) walk around Cheesman Park at sunset and then head to Safta for dinner (my favorite restaurant in Denver) and then head to Death & Co for cocktails.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shout out to three people. The first being my partner I was with in that season of my life believing in me. Sometimes you need just one person in your life to say “you got this, I believe in you, I am here if you fall”. Him believing in me gave me the courage I needed to take the leap full time. He was my biggest fan.

Second shout out is to all my couples I have captured, especially the first few weddings ever booked back in 2015. I didn’t have much of a portfolio to show, but I had excitement and a will to do my best as the photographer of your wedding day. You trusted me because you felt deep down I would show up as I said I would and I can’t thank you enough. You also believed in me and have given me the base of this incredible journey I am on. I am lucky to still capture you and your families to this day!

And lastly I want to thank me. Sounds a bit odd to some, but I put in a lot of effort to get where my business is at today, mostly self taught. It is a well oiled machine thanks to early mornings, late nights, endless consumption of education, not being able to spend time with friends and family on the weekends, lots of no’s that didn’t stop me from finding those yes’. I continue to believe in me and more so now then ever <3
