Meet Mary Peatrowsky-Haas | Mixed Media Mosaic Artist/Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Peatrowsky-Haas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have been a mixed media mosaic artist for past 15 years. This beautiful journey began when a friend gave me a piece of broken pottery and suggested I create a mosaic. She thought I had some sort of artist flair. I can honestly say I didn’t really know anything about mosaics. There is the never ending learning of substrates, adhesives, glass, found objects etc. When I was not working fulltime with my medical career, I was in my studio learning and creating. In 2020, I retired. I feel very blessed to be able to spend more time in my studio expanding my creative expression through art.
My husband and I love the outdoors. When hiking or camping, I am always looking for treasures and how I can incorporate it into my mosaics when possible. The pleasure of making something beautiful out of scraps and found objects, sounds like an fabulous idea.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artwork is bold and innovative, selecting mosaic materials from a broad palette of glass, stone, ceramic, and recycled objects. I design specifically for the installation and blend select materials and cutting edge technical approaches to achieve graceful and sophisticated art, and fabricate the work to endure and thrive in whichever environment it is installed. My personal work is constantly evolving. The palette is endless and yet so satisfying!
I work with a diverse range people from different backgrounds, and I like the challenge of persuading people that art is not something intimidating, but something that is inspiring to be involved in and that mosaic can be done by everyone. I believe that this sort of project is good for general well-being and social cohesion, because by working together on a project like this, people increase their social skills, confidence, and self-esteem and motivation. The finished mosaic gives you a sense of pride and ownership. Part of the process is building new networks of friends and support and helps communities and individuals thrive. I teach mosaic classes at my home studio in Loveland, CO: beginner and advanced.
I undertake public commissions as well as for individuals and businesses. My artwork is displayed at the Loveland Museum Gift Shop and on my Etsy Shop.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Loveland, Colorado (Sweetheart City) is a well known art community. It offers 3 outdoor sculpture parks and Loveland Museum/Gallery. First Friday Art Walks-is a free self-guided walking tour that celebrates creativity, visual art and musical performances on the first Friday of every month. Loveland has a 23 miles of paved recreation trails around the town. It offers several breweries and great food. Estes Park and Rocky Mountain Park National Park is just a short 32 miles away.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my family and friends for all of the support in my creative ideas and encouraged growth over the years. My husband for agreeing to my early retirement to pursue my creativity and my passion for mosaics. They continue to support me in every way.
