We had the good fortune of connecting with Mckenna Zalucha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mckenna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After graduating high school, I moved from Colorado to northern Michigan to be closer to family. I have always been someone with an entrepreneurial spirit & passion to create. During my first long (and very cold) winter in Michigan, I knew I needed something to keep me busy (and warm), so I started Button Up North! I knit handmade hats, scarves, mittens and more.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
All my hats are handmade. I even make the faux fur pom that goes on top! I feel most proud of my work when I see them out in the wild. It’s extremely cold in northern Michigan, and I feel like my hats are one way to get to look cute while staying warm & getting to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy making specific sports team hats, mom & me sets, animal critter hats for littles & so much more. It’s a great creative outlet. I’m always finding something new to learn and work on. I also spend the winter attending maker markets, which is a nice way to meet fellow crafters, as well as customers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to my hometown of Boulder, CO! We would visit all the downtown shopping on Pearl St., get some beignets at Lucille’s Creole Cafe & probably go for a hike up Mt. Sanitas for some spectacular views.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to my sixth grade teacher! I signed up for Handi-Crafters, an after-school club which is where I learned the basics to crochet & knitting. I was instantly hooked!
