We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Flanell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Taking care of myself is paramount for the success of my business. A full nights sleep, clean eating, very little drinking and keeping stress levels low allow me to work hard day in and day out. A healthy mind and body really allows me to interact positively with customers, ensure the wellness of my employees, and avoid mental burnout.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own a firearm education business and ecommerce presence. My 9-5 is managing everything from product ordering and accounting to the sales floor and Human Resources. My spare time is devoted to my business and during the week, I work full time managing a multi-recreational facility consisting of retail store, shooting ranges, military museum and outdoor paintball and dirt bike parks. The most challenging part of my job has been finding a work-life balance. I have not started a family yet and I wonder when and if I’ll ever get time to fulfill that part of my life goals.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend visited from out of town, I’d take them to Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Red Rocks, Cave of the Winds, maybe a weekend trip to ski in Vail. To eat, I’d take them to the Famous Steakhouse or one of my favorite Latin restaurants. If available, maybe a festival in downtown Denver or a football game at Mile High. Day trips to Boulder’s Flatirons or the hot springs is nice too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, Terry, really deserves recognition for my success. Although she has passed, she taught me more about the logistics of managing a business than I ever learned in school.
My dad of course for giving me rare opportunity to fulfill my potential in business and believing in me. He taught me anything is possible when you work hard, never ever give up and all the while, maintain a strong sense of humor.
