We had the good fortune of connecting with Mercedes Peña and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mercedes, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is absolutely necessary to grow! You have to take risks and learn from the experience in order to progress. For us, moving to Colorado was a risk as we did not know anyone and were not familiar with the area. If we would have never made the leap, we would not have started our amazing business and helped so many people make incredible memories.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Basket & Berries is a luxury picnic company servicing the Colorado Springs area. Our attention to detail truly sets us apart as we go above and beyond to make each picnic a memorable experience whether it be an elopement or a date night. Building each table, hand selecting individual items to display, designing the theme, creating arrangements and charcuterie boards is part of the process to curate one of our picnics. We are incredibly proud to be two young woman entrepreneurs who were able to create a business from scratch even down to the products we use while, working full time jobs and having an amazing puppy to keep us busy.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely start one morning out with breakfast and mimosas at Denver Biscuit Co. in downtown Colorado Springs or just a few blocks down Urban Egg! Throughout the week we would hike Mt Cutler at the beautiful Cheyenne Mountain, visit Garden of the Gods, experience a sunset with Basket & Berries Picnic Co., ride the Royal Gorge Train or Pike Peaks Cog, and take a day trip to Denver or Breckenridge. In the evening definitely check out Coati or Cask & Cork in downtown Colorado Springs and maybe get some late night tacos at TByrds only a few blocks away.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would love to shoutout Craft & Crumbles, an incredible cookie company run by Jennifer Choi. She took a chance in partnering with us while we were fairly new, helped us co-host an event, and has since helped our business grow! She is an entrepreneur, business woman, and makes the most stunningly delicious cookies.
