Meet Michael Rice | Owner of 5 Rice STudio – Custom Shirts & Decals

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In life you have to take risk in order to be able to move forward. Without taking any risk you will never have a new experience, you will never get that new job, you will never meet the love of your life, you will never find your purpose. You take a risk every day waking up. You have to make a decision, each and every day, that you are willing to move forward. You will have to try. You will have to step outside of your comfort zone. It is going to be scary. It is going to be stressful. You will fail. Without trying, you will never achieve failure. Only in failure will you learn. Fail. Fail many times. One of these time you will succeed and at that moment you will understand fully why you took the risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have mainly worked in call centers for the majority of my “work career”. If anyone has worked in a call center, you know what it’s like. It always starts ok but then the calls, over time, really start to just get old. It takes a strong person to work in customer service and an even stronger one to do it over the phone. Over the years the job just became unfulfilling. I wasn’t happy. Over time it got worse. I hit a level that I truly hope no one ever has to hit at a job they hate. I could never stop thinking about the job and it was so stressful. The weight was overbearing. I finally hit a point where I needed out. I found my way out by starting my own business. It has been so much more work and the hours are so much longer but the rewards are so much sweeter. I no longer have nightmares of my job. I never wake up on Monday dreading what is to come. Every day is my day, my day to earn it, my day to make it everything I can. every day is my day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love small business now that I have my own. I would start at caffeinated cow for coffee and ice cream. We would probably have to do lunch at Caine’s because everyone has to eat there at least one time. Obviously make the one trip through Garden of the Gods and Maintou. I would make a trip through Cave of the Winds and Grafitti Falls. I would have to stop by Graffi-T’s , the tshirt printer in Colorado Springs because Miss Juli has been someone to help me from the very beginning and I bring everyone to say hi. A night walk through Gold Camp road is always something to get the heart pumping. There is no chance we would miss some disc golf! Walking through downtown on a Wednesday evening with all the Pokemon Go crowd is out is something different to do as well. One place that I think everyone should go is 11 Mile Canyon, specifically the “Spillway” camp ground. Take your fly fishing gear and have some of the most peaceful times you could imagine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is no doubt that this journey could not have come as far as it has without the effort of many. There is a saying that I heard once, “If you want to go fast…go alone. If you want to go far…go together”. I can’t begin to explain how true this sentence is. My wife and kids have stood by me from day 1. In the scary times and in the moments of triumph, I have been blessed to always have a group rooting for me to win. Miss Juli from Graffi-Ts. She has literally helped me from day 1. I will always and forever be in debt to her for her kindness and willingness to help my family and I. Thank you! My mentors. The knowledge they have blessed me with and the time they have so graciously given, has been something that has helped me learn countless lessons. Learning from the group of people I have been blessed to have around me is something I will forever and always be grateful for. Lastly, I may be one of the few that do this but here it goes, I give a shoutout to myself. I am proud of myself for taking a chance at changing the future for my family and myself. The journey of changing your outlook on life and what it has available for you is harder that it sounds. To all those people out there who show up every day and give it your all to build a future for your loved ones and yourself…I salute you. Keep going. You WILL make it.
