We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole De Haven-Malik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Having a great support system and learning to take risks has been integral to growing creatively and as a business. I think of the years I spent in my own little bubble, trying to make things work and then the shift I felt when I started venturing outside my comfort zone and met some other creatives, building authentic, supportive relationships. We’re taught as children that we’re only as good as the company we keep and it’s true. Surrounding myself with folk that push me and inspire me and who I can reciprocate has been a game-changer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is less about the sultry, come hither photos we often think of when we hear boudoir and so much more about saying a big F*** You to society’s antiquated beauty standards. Being the vessel that gives people a better view into what true beauty is is something that drives my work and my heart. I photograph people as they are. The candid intimate portraits are relaxed and vulnerable. They are slivers in time, paused, that show so much more than just a sexy pose ever could.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Find an amazing Airbnb, rent a car, and head to any of Colorado’s gorgeous national or state parks. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, Rocky Mountain National Park, Roxborough State Park. Or just drive into the mountains, stopping along the way for a dip in any of the many hot springs that dot the landscape. After a day of exploring, enjoy a great meal at any of the great local spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A HUGE shoutout to my husband for not letting me make excuses. And for buying me my first digital camera and helping to create amazing opportunities for travel which always inspires me!
