We had the good fortune of connecting with Patric Massey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patric, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was a very hard headed kid, that thought he knew everything. I dropped out of school and took my GED just because i felt school was not meant for me. I tried playing for multiple semi professional teams. I was never selected, not because i wasn’t good or talented, but because i had nothing to back it up with. No high school or college game film. To them i was just some random kid off the street. I found myself up in Montana out of all the places i could of chose. No phone, one duffle bag full of shoes and clothes, and probably 200$ in my pocket. Long story short i became homeless living out of my car. For several months that was my life. No education, no job, no way of communicating with my family, no place to shower, no money to eat. For several months i struggled to survive. But something kept me going, something or someone helped me though one of the hardest times in my life. I finally decided to find my way back to my family in phoenix. Where i decided i was done working dead end jobs. I went to Phoenix College and finished my two years there on a full ride scholarship and transferred to Columbia College where i finished with a degree in Graphic Design. That’s when i started Hype Designs, LLC. My hardships and the bad choices i made only made me stronger and showed me that i need to work hard to not put myself in the same predicament i was in.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art i feel is different and unique. I specialize in photo manipulation and photo editing. I love to take a regular picture and turn it into something special and unique. I learned a lot over the easy through a lot of trial and error and a lot of tutorials from YouTube that has helped me learn new techniques to grow my talent. But when i am not doing my graphic work. I was formally a member of the Harlem Wizards. We are a Professional show basketball team that travel all around performing in front of thousands of fans delivering our own brand of Trick-Hoops and Alley-Oops. I loved being a part of this team and performing in front of fans and making them life and forget about all the negative outside the court.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first i would take them to my wife’s shop. Decadent and show them around and give them some of the most delicious treats and goodies in the Springs area. Next i love going bowling so i would probably take them to the Summit. Brass Tap is where me and my wife went on our first date so that would be another place i would go. I like to just chill at home I’m not much of a going out type person lol.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my mom for starters. She has been by myside and helped push me to prevent me from going back to where i was. She has supported me through everything. Anytime i needed anything, (guidance, money, love, etc.) she was there without a doubt. Next i would like to thank my wife, Britni Massey. She has shown me how to be more financially stable and helped me get myself back on my feet and in the right direction.
