We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I feel the most important factor behind my success/the success of Rachel’s Creations is my true love of art & the joy I get from helping others feel happy & find joy and confidence through art! I pride myself in painting “Happy Faces for ALL” and I love seeing a child giggle/smile when I hold up the mirror to show them their fun designs after I face paint for them. I also love seeing my students smiling faces when I take a group photo of them after a canvas painting class – especially those with people who have never painted before and accomplish something they’re proud to hang in their own homes!
Word of mouth is everything after doing a good job, listening to my clients desires and helping bring their ideas to life through art! Many of my customers are repeat clients after 24 years in business or referrals and I love that!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel my joy for art & sharing it with others is what sets me apart from others! I don’t just do this for the paycheck (what artist does)? but it’s truly an innate talent & skill I’m happy to share with others. You know you’re doing what you love when hours go by quickly when you’re doing what you love for work and in life! I’m also extremely intent on listening to my clients desires to help provide exactly what they are wanting for their special events, classes, murals in their residential or commercial settings & more! I think my happiness exudes through my smile, friendliness and desire to truly help bring happiness to people’s lives through art.
My main challenge was spreading the word about my business to new clients when I moved from Littleton up to Conifer, CO in 2014 and I helped cultivate new local clients in the community mainly through social networking (thanks Julie Dikken & Michelle Hoglan for helping me learn skills to help with that) and through my involvement and networking with Mountain Women in Business (a local small business women’s networking group along the 285 Corridor & beyond of which I’m currently Co-President).
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m SO blessed and lucky to live at The Henderson Hideaway in Conifer, Colorado! I first visited Colorado at 17 years old and knew I was meant to live here someday. It all fell into place in 1994 and I moved to Littleton then on to Conifer in 2014. I LOVE it when friends/family visit and I get to share my love for Colorado with them! I love showing them Red Rocks Amphitheater & Park, Pine Valley Ranch open space park, drives over Mt. Evans and down into Georgetown, seeing Broadway musicals at the Buell theater and taking them to great local restaurants and spots which often overlook lakes, rivers and streams throughout the state. I love all the amazing natural outdoor places to see in Colorado as well like the Great Sand Dunes, Glenwood Springs, Deer Creek Canyon, Chatfield Reservoir, Mesa Verde & many more – too many to mention here but I’m lucky to have been able to enjoy many places in our wonderful state! I’ve been blessed to cross many things off my bucket list here like hot air ballooning, skydiving, white water rafting, rock climbing & much more!
I’m also honored to introduce them to my huge “Framily” (friends who are family) that I’m so blessed to have cultivated since moving here all own my own in my late 20’s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, friends & clients have always been incredibly supportive ever since my professional art career began in 1999 after a 10 year career in forensics as a Field Agent/Deputy Coroner Investigator. I joke that my art career truly began by taking crayons to moms’ kitchen wall as a kid (although it wasn’t quite as appreciated back then hahaha!). I just needed a bit of confidence in myself and some help & training from other artists I love & admire to take the leap myself with my own artistic company.
Special thanks to my first “official client” Mary Pat Swartsley and fellow artists John Pugh, Manuel Cruz III., Jackie Green Armstrong & Armita Motallebi for their encouragement and sharing their “mad skills” with me to help me improve as an artist and human being in the world!
