We had the good fortune of connecting with Renacio Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renacio, why did you pursue a creative career?
Through my combined love for art and psychology, Surrealism is at the intersection I find myself stationed at. Finding an outlet where I am free to explore both simultaneously is priority, fashion so happens to be my preferred means of accomplishing the creative ideas onto a canvas. At this crossroads there is alot to take in consideration, like the field of modern psychology and how its commentary is effecting practical medicine and therapy for mental health. Keeping up with art movements that are happening now and how alot of its themes have been recycled over human history. Both of these in conjunction can offer a good projection on what the future of surrealism or future psychologically driven art movements may have to say. The fashion industry however has been (more so than general art, in my opinion) been too driven by hierarchy, classism and the bourgeoisie, making this a more frivolous gamble in terms of what may or may not be widely accepted by the masses in the future. Being said, I am free to experiment on niche approaches to storyline and aesthetic application in my fashion. Finally I can apply these three themes and let my subconscious mind flow, this kind of liberation of thought is the main driving force to why I chose to start my brand Renacio.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Throughout my time at the University of North Texas, I was allotted (at least in a professional sense) a lot of wiggle room for experimentation. As a student, I managed to build a strong network of drag queens, internet stars, porn stars and models. Through my relationship with this demographic I was able to experiment freely through commissions. It was throughout this beginning stage of my fashion career that I was able to find out what did and didn’t work for me and the client. Having had 3 fashion shows in major stages before I graduated, I was subsequently opening bigger opportunities for the brand. In fact, right before graduation you could already see Renacio on the red carpet in Los angeles, gracing the best dressed list pages of several magazines. Appearances on Vogue and Time magazine were solidifying Renacio and an emerging force in the fashion scene for both red carpets and editorial shoots. Though on a quick uphill trajectory, the global pandemic halted the progress of the brands marketing completely. This was a major turning point since my main source of income was the brand itself at this point. Having entered the major fashion competition of FGI (Fashion group International), I recovered my confidence quickly winning the Directors choice award and a cash prize of $10,000. With this financial help and extra time to reflection on the direction of the brand, I am at an excellent pivotal point in my career and have switched gears for the future. The normal fashion show format I was used to will now be switched digital with a storyline type film which includes a documentary on my work and lookbook with a diverse cast of models. Though the hiccup of the pandemic was a blow to the rhythm I had spent years creating, I am greatful and excited to present to the world what I have to say in regards to mixing art, psychology and fashion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having moved to Denton recently I have come to discover a beautiful town with a lot of great places to relax. Being that we are still in a pandemic, there is not a lot of adventuring that happens in my life, this however allows for a lot of time to think at home and occasionally stop by the square in denton right by my house. My favorite places to visit are the coffee shops Jupiter house and West oak, here is where I can get lost in a book with some hot tea. My love language is quality time, so this experience would easily be where I would like to invite a friend to enjoy each other’s company and dissect whatever topic is in the zeitgeist.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge driving force for my inspiration and motivation in the human experience is connecting with and sharing perspectives with the community. My love and dedication is all to my friends and family. Isabel thank you for being the golden standard for friendship in my life.
