We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Salls and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robin, how does your business help the community?

I believe we’re doing our part in helping change the narratives around aging and beauty for all, especially helping turn the tide for midlife women. Society tends to lean into spoonfeeding messages that as one ages you become less relevant, less beautiful and less worthy, which is simply wrong.

Our magazine is one of the first magazines specifically sharing images of everyday women embracing their natural hair and silvers that has started changing the the stories around gray, silver and white hair. Our message is that women should define beauty and aging for themselves and if they want, silver is a viable beauty option. It is just another color and just as beautiful as blonde, red, brown, black, pink, etc.  It shouldn’t be a taboo color that gets imprisoned into a box of negativity around aging.

We’re encouraging women to embrace themselves proudly, celebrate other women and inspire future generations to not let outdated notions lead them down a rabbit hole. Aging shouldn’t equate to feeling like you’re being put out to pasture. Aging actually leads many midlife women to finding a new freedom from the voices that said they couldn’t do this or that and start to question more why they ever thought they couldn’t do something. I believe it’s the gift of wisdom that does come with age and we should be celebrating it.

We hope as more women speak up and define beauty and aging for themselves that more brands will include represention for midlife women that shows us as powerful women embracing stylish lifestyles. Most women are tired of the outdated styles that represent aging women.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My favorite childhood memory is sitting on the couch brushing my Newmommy’s white hair while we watch Saturday morning horror flicks in Upstate New York. I would spend hours with her brushing her hair or visiting my Great GrandMother in a nursing home bringing her Three Muskateer Bars. In middle school I volunteered to read to seniors. After high school I became a CNA at a local nursing home to afford living on my own. Aging didn’t scare me in my youth. I loved the wisdom and stories I was surrounded by daily.I never fully understood until recently just how much those moments led me to where I am in business today.
Tangled Silver Magazine comes out six times a year and was created to encourage women to define beauty and aging for themselves. Then we added a call to action to join our #iamsilverbeauty movement that calls for changing the narratives around aging. Through our magazine, online and in-person events we’re hoping to bridge the gap between brands and consumers. Most women are wanting representation for the women they are today, not to be told we should be chasing youth.

I still have 80’s commercials reeling around in my head about coloring that gray right out. Luckily, I’ve moved those reels over to the blooper catagory where they belong. Dont get me wrong…I’m not anti-color. I colored for over 20+ years. I am however done with anyone telling women we need to color our hair or worry about our age to still be relevent today.

I believe this so fully that I launched the magazine in 2021, two years after embracing my natural silvers. I was frustrated that there wasn’t better representation for what silver/gray hair on a midlife woman could look like and thought there had to be other women thinking the same thing. When I couldn’t find a magazine for silver haired women, Iknew I had to create one. Some thought I was crazy to take this risk. The first issue confirmed that I wasn’t alone in my thinking. First lesson learned – follow your gut. I wasn’t alone.

I’ve always loved supporting women in business. I love sharing midlife sisters showcasing that our age and hair color don’t define us. Midlife women are rocklng their next chapters. I feel honored to be entrusted to share their stories and be a part of the change I see coming for women to feel more empowered in midlife than ever before. Another lesson gleaned – we all want to be heard. Taking the time to listen, really listen to others is rewarding for both parties. I don’t think the women I’ve been fortunate to share know just how much they’ve brought into my life with their stories. I get up daily excited wondering who I’m going to meet today to share in a future issue!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love living in Northern Colorado and having the city life of Denver under an hour away, but having all the perks of quick outdoor access at my door. Estes Park is one of my favorite mountain towns to share with people. It’s right at the man entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park and it just has its own quirky mountain style.

Lots of hikes to do, but a favorite is sweet little Gem Lake with views of Estes Valley worth every single step you take and they are steps to get up to it! Afterwards,  I’m always up for a good pizza at Antonio’s on the main strip. Something about that New York style pizza after a good hike.

Estes Park also offers two of my sweet tooth favorites. The Taffy Shop is the oldest one in town and I just love visiting them time and time again. They make it in house and I think its the best. You can’t go to Estes without getting taffy from them. Then when it comes to fudge there is only one place I get mine, Caramel Crisp. It’s on the main street as well, but you need to really look for it as the entrance door is almost on a slant. The shop is tiny, but mighty in taste in the fudge department. They offer other goodies too, but it’s the fudge I go in for.

For dinner I’d suggest Twin Owls Steakhouse inside The Tahara Lodge. Food is amazing and the location is beautiful if you want to add in a stay. Another good dinner option that has been a staple in the community is Nicky’s. And you can head to Estes Park without checking out The Stanley Hotel. She’s full of history buff’s dreams. She’s also the hotel that inspired the movie “The Shining”.

I love this town so much that we’re hosting our first annual Sisterhood Experience this September there!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Personally my Newmommy (grandmother) was the first silver woman in my life that rocked her life with love and enthusiasm that always had me knowing that’s how I was going to want to age as I got older. My hubs Dave & my daughter Elle encouraged me even before I knew I was ready to fully embark on my natural silvers shining through. Having their love and backing is indescribable and I wish everyone could feel so supported by their closest loved ones as I have.

But, I really need to give credit to the women I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with from my models to She-Pack writers who step up everytime I reach out to share their stories and knowledge with our readers. A special shout out to my first writer Tina Pirozzoli, who reached out directly after a social post I shared that I was jumping in to create Tangled Silver Magazine. She believed in my vision and has been on the ride ever since. Stories inspire and these women…everyone inspiring in their own unique way bring their flavor to changing the stories around aging and beauty. I wake up everyday excited by who I might get to meet that day! So, if you see an excited long silver haired woman walking up to you in a store, don’t panic, it’s most likely me wanting to tell you how beautiful you are!
