We had the good fortune of connecting with Robyn Swinford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Shortly after having our second son we decided that our kiddos would really benefit from having a parent home with them. So I left my job as a Registered Nurse and had the opportunity to pursue a home based business. My thought was that I could build something, do something I love and make money doing it, all while having the chance to be near my kids every day!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a huge believer that things turn out the way they’re supposed to, but I also strongly believe that we manifest our own lives.
I’m a registered nurse and love so many things about that. After my kids were born though, I began acknowledging that thing that we all know; life is short. You never know when you could run out of chances to go for it, so when the opportunity shows up, take it!
My home bakery focuses on custom cakes, cookies, macarons and some chocolate creations. I love that I get to take someone’s celebration and make it more memorable by adding something sweet and beautiful.
I’m completely self taught. I had a solid foundation but I’ve literally just learned as I’ve been afforded the opportunity to do work for customers. I started a Facebook group so that some friends and family could follow my baking journey and I’m so humbled and proud that I now have 1.2k followers. It’s been one year! To me, this is the biggest compliment and the thing I’m most proud of. The growth is almost entirely referral. Beyond being grateful for that, it makes me so excited about what’s to come! This is a testament to the fact that it’s worth it to pursue your passions.
My inspiration comes from everywhere. I had a pretty traumatic situation where my vision was greatly compromised about three years ago. When I made it through what was a pretty tough surgery and super scary situation, I started noticing the world around me differently. I am more aware of colors, shapes, things I find beautiful.
Sometimes when I’m driving my kids to school and it’s so clear and beautiful and the mountains are vivid. Suddenly I’m wanting to create a watercolored cake with beautiful blues and greens and purples. Inspiration just hits me.
Something that makes my brand unique is that my home bakery uses fresh eggs out of my backyard. I’ve got a hen house full of gorgeous chickens who provide unbelievable eggs. I use most (gotta save a few for myself!) of the eggs in bakery goods snd I truly feel that fresh eggs make a very noticeable and delicious difference. I make a strong point to also use ingredients made by companies who support humane treatment of animals, sustainable farming and make a point to be environmentally responsible. These matters are all very important to me!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d definitely need to spend a day walking around Union Station, eating some delicious Southern styled food at Tupelo Honey.
Next up an amazing rooftop sunrise yoga class followed by a stroll around the Cherry Creek Reservoir dog park and followed by lunch at Kororo on Colorado Blvd.
Hopefully the visit would be in June so we could check out Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks
Have to take a stroll up Deer Creek Canyon and check out the view from the top of Devil’s Peak. Brunch at B&B Cafe in Downtown Castle Rock and finish the trip with a stop in at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. Without them there is no way I could be pursuing this dream! They say it takes a village and my village is amazing. A special thank you though to my husband who is unconditionally supportive, my kids who keep my hands and heart full every day, and my mom who helps me in so many ways that I’d run out of room listing them all!
