Meet Sadie Hessing | Hair Artist & Salon Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Hessing and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sadie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The key to my success—and that of Nature’s Curls—lies in passion, authenticity, and compassion. When I chose curly hair as my specialty, I realized that many clients hold preconceived notions about their hair and its impact on the way others view them. My role is to help clients transform these narratives and empower them through a deeper understanding of their unique hair and effective care techniques. What sets me apart is my genuine care for each guest, my dedication to mastering the intricacies of curly hair, and my ability to listen closely to their desires.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been passionate about creativity and art, so I was thrilled to find a career that allows me to express my creativity while connecting with others. I style hair, craft unique looks, and educate clients on how to care for their hair at home. My journey with curly hair began with developing my skills and understanding each unique curl pattern. I discovered that every client’s hair is distinct, inspiring our tagline, “Every curl is unique.”

This realization posed a challenge: how could I create a framework that honors each head of curly hair and its unique factors, while developing a streamlined process to help other stylists and clients understand these intricacies? Educating others is part of my passion, and I needed a way to teach fellow stylists my intuitive method. As a creative person, organized systems don’t come naturally to me, but I recognized their necessity in teaching others.

This year, I developed the Customized Curl Care Method. This approach considers factors like hair texture, health, curl type, thickness, and individual clients’ short- and long-term goals. From there, I create a unique plan that respects each guest while maintaining a streamlined process.

Nature’s Curls was established as a sanctuary for curly-haired clients, a place where their uniqueness is celebrated and honored. Through creating Nature’s Curls, my confidence has grown, enabling me to become the beacon of light I always aspired to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Welcome to Boulder, Colorado! Boulder Colorado is probably the most magical and magnificent places I’ve been. The energy here is strong and it attracts all sorts of unique and creative people.

Day 1: Pick up at DIA and spend the day in Denver. Go to Washington Park for a light walk, then Stubens for dinner. Then go to the Grizzly Rose for some country line dancing!

Day 2: Hiking South Mesa Tail and dinner at Avanti. South Mesa Trail is the most Boulder hike I have been on without the crazy traffic of chautauqua park. Avanti is a food haul with a gorgeous rooftop with views of town.

Day 3: Lunch at Flower Child and sunset at Lost Gulch Overlook

Day 4: Day trip up to Estes Park. Hike is Rocky Mountain National Park and visit the Stanley Hotel

Day 5: Walk Pearl Street. Shop and people watch and grab dinner at Bar Taco.

Day 6: Go up in a glider plane at the Boulder Municipal Airport. Fly over the Flatirons.

Day 7: Breakfast at The Village Diner and drive through Campus.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A massive part of my success is thanks to my first salon boss and mentor, Erik Emblem, owner of Devana Salon in Denver. While in beauty school, I assisted Erik in his curly hair salon. It was my role to help wash and style clients hair. This was a great way for me to gain loads of experience along side someone who had the mastery and confidence that I strived for. Erik helped me come out of my shell and become the confident stylist I am today. Erik stressed the importance of providing a relaxing and high end guest experience, as well as receiving continued education throughout your whole career. Erik compassionately helped me come out of my shell and transform into the confident stylist I am today.
