We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Zilkha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
This might seem very ridiculous to some, but I think of it often. Tim Robbins’ character says in Shawshank Redemption “It comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying.” I have always come back to that when I am at crossroads or feeling overwhelmed with the day to day. I’m a firm believer that age is just a number and that we can accomplish great things at any point of life. That quote just simplifies it for me and I want to make the most of my time here.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kathy Thomas and I bonded on a women’s surf trip over the frustrations of finding active apparel for family trips or even the day-to-day backyard adventure. We found multiple open tabs on our computers, searching for the right outdoor apparel to dress ourselves and our families. Through our years of expert searching, we also stumbled upon many exciting brands that share the desire to produce apparel that doesn’t leave a large footprint on the planet and are aspiring to make the world a better place. Ultimately, Kathy and I landed on the idea that we could create a marketplace that delete “both” puts these niche, discovery brands on a broader platform and saves time for those who want to outfit their family with brands they can trust.

Even though the outdoor industry has made strides, it is still a very male-focused industry in which many brands still “pink it and shrink it” to offer athletic apparel to women. We were surprised at the lack of supply to women who want function AND fashion from some of the major brands.

With COVID many of our partner brands struggled, and are still struggling, with supply chain issues. We wanted to be able to launch with a marketplace that accurately represented to the community of Salt + Snow what we are and what we aspire to offer to our customers. Finding the time to accomplish that and launch proved difficult with the ongoing inventory issues that many companies face.

I believe in calculated risks and listening to your inner instinct. When we saw this large gap in the market, we knew it was a risk to launch, especially with COVID’s supply chain strains still affecting our partner brands, but we also recognized that more and more women are active – some tying it tightly to mental health – and that they are getting outdoors as much as men are. Unfortunately, this just hasn’t been recognized industry-wide yet, though my instinct says this won’t be the situation for long.

We want women to come to us because they trust the Salt + Snow team to offer them the best selection of outdoor apparel from companies that are working to make the world a better place. We want our Wanderist community to know that we have their backs and we are the place where they can celebrate the micro and macro adventures they embark on with a group of like-minded women and families.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Red Rocks is always a crowd pleaser, but you already knew that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Finding an amazing team to work with. Salt + Snow was the dream that Kathy and I built in our shared brain, but bringing it to fruition only happened because we hired a stellar team who also believes in our company and the ethos behind it.
