We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Yarbrough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, why did you pursue a creative career?
I never felt like I had to chose, for me creativity is a divine and spiritual process. Being creative is a way of life and I try to apply it in my relationships, and my other day jobs (coaching). I have been evolving a body of paintings and sculptures that depict the human experience since childhood and in the last decade created painting and home decor businesses with my wife, and an outdoor sculpture business with my Dad. Ive always seen collaborations as one of the greatest ways to become a better artist and human, so doing it with those close to me is a blessing but of course has hardships. I feel obligated to continue my creative explorations even if they aren’t always fruitful, because in life everything can be a stepping stone and crucial for the evolution of a greater body of work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My paintings are of cosmic origin and speak for themselves. My father, Carl and I started collaborating on medium to large outdoor steel sculptures 8 years ago. Carl was a retired professional freelance photographer, a 2cnd generation welder and artist of many mediums, and I studied sculpting and painting in college, and now work with wood, steel, ceramics and paint. We have been creating a series of kinetic and stationary sculptures that deal with time, space, spirit, Earth, the elements and more. Using the Fibonacci sequence and other forms of sacred geometry, these sculptures reflect light, and cast shadows in fantastic ways making them transform from day into night and from one vantage point to the next. I am still not self sustaining off my art yet but I am confident one day soon I’ll find the right footing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A show at Red Rocks, a night lost in Meowwolf convergence station. A delicious elk steak forest to table by my wife and I. Snowboard, biking, hiking or climbing in the beautiful rockies. Hopefully all of the above
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Dad who recently passed away, his spirit lives on through our sculptures and collective vision. My mom and Wife Ana. Greatest women in my life, couldn’t do it without them.
