We had the good fortune of connecting with Shape Architecture and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shape, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At a fundamental level, our work helps communities by reducing environmental impact and increasing resilience. By designing homes that are radically more energy efficient, durable, and climate responsive, we lower long term energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and create healthier indoor environments. These homes are quieter, more comfortable, and better prepared for a changing climate. These benefits directly affect the well being of the people who live in them and the communities they are part of.

Equally important is how we practice. We believe great design should be approachable and attainable, not exclusive. That means working collaboratively with clients, builders, consultants, and local trades, and demystifying the design and construction process. We take time to educate our clients about performance, materials, and long term value so they can make informed decisions that align with both their goals and broader environmental responsibility.

Our site driven approach reflects a deep respect for place. By carefully studying and responding to each site’s ecology, climate, and context, we aim to minimize disturbance, preserve natural landscapes, and design buildings that feel grounded rather than imposed. This sensitivity helps protect the character of the Mountain West while allowing thoughtful growth.

Beyond our projects, we believe sharing knowledge is a form of service. We teach, lecture, mentor, and openly share what we have learned about sustainable design, high performance construction, and efficient processes. By collaborating and educating within the design and building community, we help raise the overall standard of architecture and sustainability in our region and beyond.

Ultimately, our social impact comes from empathy. We listen closely, design responsibly, and create buildings that quietly but meaningfully improve everyday life for people and the planet.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re often asked what sets our work apart, and for us the answer lives at the intersection of performance, empathy, and place. Shape Architecture Studios was founded on the belief that buildings can and should do more. More for the people who inhabit them, more for the landscapes they sit on, and more for the climate challenges we collectively face. Getting here wasn’t easy, but it’s been deeply rewarding. One project that captures our spirit particularly well is the Passive House Nederland Home. Set high in the mountains near Nederland, Colorado, this 3,000 square foot single family home is nestled into a steep hillside within a ponderosa pine grove, exposed to intense winds, extreme cold, and a demanding high alpine climate. At over 8,000 feet in Climate Zone 7, designing a light filled, comfortable home that requires minimal energy to heat was both a technical and creative challenge, and exactly the kind of problem we love to solve. This project pushed us to fully integrate site driven design, rigorous performance modeling, and deep collaboration with our clients, consultants, and builders. Every decision from orientation and form to envelope detailing was informed by sun, wind, views, and topography. The result is a PHIUS certified Passive House that feels grounded in its landscape while achieving extraordinary energy efficiency. Being recognized with a PHIUS Design Competition award and named Colorado Green Building of the Year was gratifying, but what excites us most is how quietly successful the home is for the people living there: warm, calm, resilient, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Business wise, our path has been shaped by persistence and clarity of values. We’ve learned that saying no to projects that don’t align makes room for those that do. We’ve learned that efficiency, humility, and listening build trust. And we’ve learned that sharing knowledge rather than guarding it strengthens both our practice and our community. What we want the world to know is simple: we are collaborative, performance driven architects who believe great design should be approachable, durable, and responsive to real places and real people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’re pretty down to earth, but we know how to have a good time. A proper visit would definitely include a Trader Joe’s run for elite snacks, followed by after work drinks at Don’s Club Tavern.
We all have our different hobbies, which range from trivia nights to ultimate frisbee, climbing at Movement or up Boulder Canyon or Clear Creek, skiing the back bowls, trail riding, or karaoke. We really appreciate living in Denver where we can access the mountains, enjoy the parks and sunshine, and world-class art and music at the Denver Museum, Clyfford Still, Red Rocks, and great restaurants like Uchi, Safta, and Alma Fonda Fina, to name just a few.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We want to Shoutout our INCREDIBLE consultants! From sustainability consultants to structural engineers, we want to give credit where credit is due. Shape would not be able to do what we do best without the best given to us by our amazing team. They collaborate with us to create pieces of architecture that serve all parties with amicable drive towards a common goal. Unlike the common stereotype of a contentious relationship in architecture.
