Meet Stephanie Jordan | Potter/Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creativity runs through the veins of my family and goes back as far as I can remember.. It has shown up in different ways through different people. Some painters, others musicians, writers or makers. Creators in so many forms have a way of making an impact on your life. I remember even as a little kid always wanting to make things out of nothing. I wanted to create and use my hands to do so. I didn’t understand it as a kid but as I’ve grown to understand who I am as a person and developed my own beliefs I’ve realized this desire to create was in my since I, myself was made and it’s been developed through all the people that have been placed in my life and the experiences that I have had.
I am so thankful for people like my dad that allowed me to make a dresser along side of him that my daughters now use in their room. My mom always created space for the freedom to make things and explore new mediums and was excited to create with me. Thanks to so many people and experiences in my life I have been able to see the joys in creating and developed the desire to make it what I do.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Untethered Home ceramics stemmed from a desire to create, a desire to make things new again or to make something beautiful and functional from nothing. This desire has always been a part of me but it got a little lost for a bit of time. I became a mom and all things became midnight feedings, no sleep, and dirty diapers along with all the love and giggles in the world. As my kids grew so did my yearning to create again! I wanted a little me time and I wanted to be able to create those things from nothing again. That is when pottery came back into my life and quickly became therapy, a way for me to express myself again but it also turned into a reflection of my life as a mom of two wildings that seem to make their way into every part of me in the best way possible. Now I’m excited to create along side of my kids and allow them to see what their mom is capable of and in turn, be able to light a fire inside of them and see what might come out of their wonderful little lives.
It has not been easy to start this little business of mine but I’m trying my best to make space for grace alongside of creating. I always want making to be a place for me to be me and not stress out about the worlds view of “success.” As my pots go out into the world I think people will find that they will bring form, function, and beauty to your home. I also hope to be able to show young people coming behind me that if you have a desire to create or make that that desire is there for a reason and a purpose and that no matter what stage of life you are in, it is worth pursuing. There will always be people out there willing to help you delve into the never ending possibilities of art in all of its forms. Try new things, figure out what works and what doesn’t. Fail a few (hundred) times, because creating and making are adventurous things that create an experience for both the creator and the consumer of art.
The name the Untethered Home came from the idea that we truly live a life untethered from anything on this earth and I think the more we embrace that, the closer we can get to the people we are meant to be and I hope that I can continue to pursue that in my endeavors with pottery and hopefully my pots can create that same feeling in the homes that they end up in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To the mountains we would go! This is my first thought always when people come to town. It’s why my family moved here and it’s what I get most excited to share with visitors. After a mountain excursion we would head downtown to Arvada for dinner and drinks or to The Bluegrass Coffee and Bourbon Lounge. We love going to the location in Candelas when they have live music and the weather is wonderful. Another fun spot that I love that is also easy with kids is Acreage. Such a fun place to enjoy the views, have some hard cider, some food and let the kids play outside!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to recognize my family (lots of creative members in my family have served as inspiration to creativity) as well as a mentor that I apprenticed under to begin learning ceramics named Allison Severance. She is an exceptional wood fire potter with the most welcoming of spirits! I would also love to give a shout out to my husband Phill. Without him and his abilities to build and create, I wouldn’t have a studio and I wouldn’t be doing this thing that I love so much!
