Meet Susan Aposhyan | Embodied Spirituality

We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Aposhyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, what inspires you?
Nature! And human kindness! I aspire to practice presence and kindness 24/7. And I want us humans to be kind to ourselves, kind to each other, and kind to the earth, not exhaust it or pollute it. It inspires me when I see people being kind to each other. To be kind to others: the first step is to be aware of what is happening inside us moment to moment. Next step: be kind to what is coming up within us. Overtime, our kindness and sensitivity to ourselves naturally extends to others and to the environment.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before the pandemic I only taught in person, but since the pandemic I meet with people online. It’s great because people can come from all over the world. Once a month we have an Embodied Spirituality gathering online. We meditate. We feel our bodies and give them permission to move and rest and heal. We share with each other. Somehow we can open up to the world together and by the end we feel softer, kinder, more open to ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
There’s a lot of mindfulness happening these days. Embodied Spirituality makes more room for our personal, physical, and emotional experiences.
My work is about making friends with our lives, our challenges, our pain, and our joy.
So sure, I’ve had to face lots of limitations and difficulties, and I’ll just keep going trying to bring it all into my practice, 24/7, of kindness and presence.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Nature! So close to Denver! Hike up above the tree line. Learn about the tree line and the continental divide. Contemplate what a healthy relationship between humans and nature might look like. Practice embodied spirituality. How? Moment after moment come back to the feelings and sensations in your body. At the same time, be aware of the environment—the air, the breeze, the birds, the trees, the sun, the mountains. What is it like to mix your body awareness with nature? What does nature offer to you? Space to release your life stress? Peace? Vast openness?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Buddha! I have been a practicing Buddhism for my whole adult life and there is so much there that we need in this world right now. It’s all about presence and kindness. Still most people are not interested in religion these days. That’s why I teach Embodied Spirituality. It’s easy, anybody can do it. There’s room for feelings and confusion and normal life issues.
