We had the good fortune of connecting with Susie Brenner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susie, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
In my specific niche of interior design photography I think people are surprised how detail oriented we are and how long each image takes to perfect. I also think people are surprised by the amount of stuff we typically bring in for a photos to really make them look polished and upscale.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart as a creative is, yes, I’m absolutely focused on the final product, but I want to make the whole process enjoyable for my clients. Obviously photo shoots can be stressful I work hard at making sure we are prepared and things go as smoothly as possible and shoot day.
I guess got here where I am today professionally because of my perseverance. It is difficult in the beginning with no clients and not knowing where the money is gonna come from, and I definitely had old employers try and lure me back to working for them offering more money, which was incredibly flattering but not in the photography industry. Photography was the only plan. In the beginning I was just willing to shoot anything not just architecture but all of those experiences inform the work I do now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love playing tour guide in Colorado. My husband is from Ireland so we get a lot of Irish visitors and they love western kitsch so a day walking around downtown Golden is a hit. And then of course I have to take them up to Red Rocks, whether it’s to see a show or just walk around during the day. One of the morning would be spent at the Garden of the Gods, it’s so impressive and accessible to all humans and their capabilities. And then head over to the Broadmoor to see some classic luxury. When people come to stay with us I live in a great spot in City Park West where there’s so much walkable/bikeable stuff. Marion Cafe is great for savory crêpes and coffee in the morning also any of the Syrup locations are yum. For lunch nothing beats Snarf’s (get the roasted chicken and Swiss) or maybe some Illegal Pete’s if you’re feeling like a lunchtime Margarita. For upscale but still kind of casual dinner Cherry Creek Grill never misses the mark (get the macho salad), if you’re feeling like a little ping-pong with your dinner Ace on 17th Street for some Vietnamese street food is delicious. Lastly quick and easy there’s always Chook for some Australian roasted chicken it’s fast casual so it’s great for lunch or dinner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout outs are very long because I absolutely have been influenced and encouraged by past instructors of the, now sadly defunct, Art Institute of Colorado. Also, I significantly have had 2 photo mentors; Ron Johnson who is happily in retirement and Emily Mitton-Redfield who is still shooting but spending more time on her personal projects.
