We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Menyweather and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrance, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The process towards starting my business was something that took shape over time. I did not even have a concept that I could run my own business. I knew that I liked a variety of things and that I could do anything so I always had that in my mind. It wasn’t until I was working at Hewlett Packard in Houston. It was back in 2008 and I became aware that they were laying off people who had worked there for a long time and replacing them with new people like me. I have always been thoughtful about my environment. I noticed that my manager was very unhappy. I noticed that he drove a beat up car, and lived by himself in an apartment. So I asked him one day how long had he been working there and how much he made. He replied that he worked there for 10 years and was only making $15 a hour. At that point I knew I had to find another option. Fast forward 3 or 4 years later, and a lot has changed. I am now in the national guard, working a part time gig and going to school full time.

I encountered a lot of hardship in my first year of being out on my own. A series of unfortunate events that could not be controlled sent me into poverty. I was eating peanut butter to survive. Instead of focusing on the negative and what I didnt have I turned to my inner spirit for guidance. I started meditating and reading more self help books and watching funny videos to ease the turmoil. It was then I realized that I could sell stuff on ebay and make money from it. I realized that it was easy and I enjoyed it. One thing led to another and I could sell just 1 thing and have it packed and ready to be shipped in under a hr and it would be more than I made in 2 weeks. From that point I took a look at the things I loved and wanted to do and started creating a plan. From there I was inspired to create my first business called Beast Exhaust. (This is actually a long story) From idea sprouted Beast Meet.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Id say that a lot of who I am comes from who I have always been. It is what gave me my interest in certain things. I would also say that JROTC in high school gave me a lot of tools that helped me with communication, motivation, and leadership. I was the armed drill team commander and I feel that my influence really propelled that program. Also during my high school years I was able to experience film and photography to a high degree which helped me develop the foundation to see from a artful frame.

I got to where I am by taking the time to meditate and think over how life was in the moment. From there I could pay attention to what was going on and where I wanted to go. I didn’t know how I would get to where I wanted to be but I knew that the universe would get me there. With this mindset It helped ease my perceived burden from various societal expectations. This allowed me to be free to be myself as I knew the lessons would be brought out through my passions and interests.

In the beginning there were many burdens, and barriers but I knew that it was just the passing moment and that I had to learn from it. There was a period of time where I was in the national guard and working for Barnes and nobles part time while going to school. I had went into military training earlier than other people so that I could make more money and get ahead on bills. There was a issue with my pay when I got there which meant that I wasn’t going to get paid on time.

To make matters worst, upon leaving training the government shutdown and I was not on any priority list to be paid. There was also a giant ice storm that came into town and forced the city to shut down. During this time I wasnt able to work my part time job. In my desperation, I fell for a money scam and ended up getting locked out of my bank account for a month. I was forced to start selling things on ebay in order to be able to pay bills. I ended up liking it and decided to learn more about it in school. In the hardest times, I found that turning within was what got me out of the box I was stuck in.

I eventually found myself working for a start-up sports club. I knew that I had a great opportunity to get a lot of hands on experience that would help me with my path. Through working there I was able to see the reality of the business world. I could analyze why certain things weren’t working and what was working. I was able to see some of the danger signs to watch out for when working with people. Most importantly I found out that the our club was doing good and growing because we had some really great people working with us. They were service to others oriented and had big hearts. From there I knew that if wanted to get anywhere, I would need to have many great people working with me.

I want people to know that despite the hand that they were dealt in life that they are able to change their cards. I think its important to understand that anyone can lift them selves up and that there is a lot of unseen support all around us.

I am especially proud of myself that now when any problem comes up, I know that I can solve it and that it does not emotionally drain me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is pretty hard for me as the world has so much to offer. I enjoy things that relax me so I like places that are beautiful. My favorite place to go to is New Mexico. I really enjoy the hot springs, the mountains and the culture there. The food is also amazing. I would take friends to a place called “The Pharmacy” and have them order their breakfast waffle. I cant find that any like that anywhere else. Another one of my hobbies is crystal and gem collecting out in nature. I enjoy going to a place called Ocean View Gem Mine. At this mine you are able to pan for tourmaline, aquamarine, and other valuable and beautiful stones. The travel plan would involve traveling halfway around the nation and back. Stopping for beautiful landscapes to snap some photos.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to GOD. I feel like this is stated at every award ceremony and became a cliche some where along the way. To be honest I mean it. Without the random uncontrolled circumstances and insights that came from the universe I would of been a completely different person. God was one who showed me love, and compassion. God shielded me from danger and let me know that even in my toughest moments that I was right where I needed to be. I am definitely sponsored by God and that love translates through me into my passions. This love gives me the motivation to dedicate a percentage of our profits to a social cause for each company I start and will start in the future. I do appreciate and want to give a shout out to my family and all my friends who I also call my family. I also want to give a shout out to all the haters that tried to keep me down and motivated me in order to succeed. I am grateful to people with kind hearts who are willing to serve others. I am especially grateful to many motivational books and speakers I have listened too over the years.
