We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That you have to be selfish and cut-throat in order to succeed. I believe that if you treat people with respect, and kindness, they will happily come back. A lot of clients that I meet find me through word of mouth, so it’s important that people feel safe and respected in your presence. Meeting people where they’re at, understanding them, and doing everything in your power to make sure their experience is fulfilling, is very important.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m proud of the way that my work has evolved over the years, and the way that it makes people feel. I based my business around empowering women, and have slowly started to photograph men, as well. My style is very dark, and moody, with a focus on highlights and posing. I believe in transparency, honesty, and working together to break-down any fears or concerns that are built up around booking a session. I love working with women who have no experience in front of the camera, and showing them what they’re capable of – I also really enjoy working with friends who model in their free time, in order to fulfill personal projects together. It was challenging to get to where I am now, and I am definitely still growing. Photography is something that leaves room for all kinds of ideas, and you never truly stop evolving. Your style, editing, and overall outlook changes so frequently. I overcame a lot of the challenges along the way by reminding myself that I am passionate and capable, that intention is so beautiful in creation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I feel as if I’m an easygoing person, and am always open to new things. I love finding coffee shops I’ve never been to before, and making a mental score card for the future. Most often, you’ll find me in my backyard, around a fire, with my close circle of friends. I wouldn’t label my self introverted by any means, but I like comfort, and I find that in my inner circle.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have the greatest, most supportive friends in the world. I had always been interested in photography, but I never thought of actively pursuing it long-term. I just didn’t think it was possible. My friends pushed me to keep creating, to advertise that I was taking clients, and to put myself out there. I don’t think I would have had the courage to try, on my own, without them.
