Being outdoors. Whether I’m in a field of wildflowers, or among a stand of tall aspens or ponderosa pines, or on an island somewhere in the Pacific, looking at a one-of-a-kind species of bird, being outside makes me happy. Then, what makes me happy is sharing the experience, by my photography and journalism. When I first heard this question, my mind started automatically listing various people, pets, places, and other things that seem to “make” me happy, each of them alive in their own right, and imbued with various memories, experiences, and emotions. And while it’s certainly true that I derive immense amounts of joy from laughing with my daughter, hiking with my husband, or playing guitar and singing, I have also had enough birthdays by now to realize some deeper truths about happy living. What makes me the happiest is, helping others! I have had so many amazing opportunities to work with women of all ages and backgrounds. I believe that self care is so important to our mental health and in a world that is so fast-paced, we tend to forget about ourselves a lot. I love being able to show young women simple things like styling their hair for school…. Helping them build a confidence in themselves that can carry on into adulthood.
