By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. The first 3 years were sacrificed for the business. Open 7 days per week, 365 days per year, our weekends, holidays, and vacations all took a backseat to NCV. We put all our time, money, and energy into growing the company and making it sustainable. In the past few years, with growth in the organization, we’ve had the ability to hire exceptional team members. Our work/life balance has improved drastically and we now have regular days off, which was inconceivable years ago. When I first started writing, it was in snippets and stolen moments. I was a new mom, completely exhausted, and didn’t have a routine for myself. Two a.m., I’d be sneaking handfuls of peanut M&Ms and writing a paragraph before the next round of feeding or diaper changes started. It worked to an extent; I wrangled my first complete manuscript out of that system, but it was difficult. Since then, I’ve learned how to ask for help when I need it. Taking care of myself is just as important as providing for my family, so I will carve an hour out to write instead of relying solely on moments of opportunity. Read more>>

How has balance changed over time My balance has changed like a rollercoaster on an exciting, mysterious journey. There are always ups and downs and chaotic moments where I need to find the light at the end of the tunnel. Work life balance is something I’m constantly striving for, as a mom of three kids under the age of 6 and being married to an Army member who is currently deployed I have to make sure that I am both able to help provide for my family and be there for my kiddos.
