We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Rissel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Yoga Teacher Conf was born when I became sick of the yoga industry. I got sick of hearing yoga teachers say “just trust in the universe.” I got tired of being paid almost nothing but being asked to invest thousands of dollars into my continuing education. I got tired of hearing about more sexual misconduct in the yoga industry. I got tired of other yoga studios stealing my intellectual property. I got sick of hearing everyone complain about the yoga teacher industry but no one take action. So I decided that I would take action and work to help connect, support and provide affordable continuing education for yoga teachers. I created the Yoga Teacher Conf as a way for yoga teachers to come together, learn from each other, create community over competition and be change we want to see in the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A yoga teacher’s journey doesn’t stop after a 200-hour yoga teacher training. In fact, for many of us that is when the journey really begins. A yoga instructor’s learning, growth, and deeper authenticity is vital for their student’s growth. Often yoga instructors give and give and give with their hearts wide open, to guide their students to ever deeper parts of themselves. They create a safe space of non-judgment where others can quietly sit with themselves and feel accepted just as they are. Yoga instructors need safe spaces like that too. Spaces where they can decompress and explore their own forgotten places. Spaces that encourage them to go deeper into their bodies and their beings, where they can unashamedly fill their own cups in order to help and guide others to fill theirs. A space where they can simply exist in a community of others like themselves. Where ideas are shared and explored, where knowledge is gained, where authenticity is encouraged. A community that vibrates and resonates with the collective energy of co-creating, of support, of increasing and attracting knowledge, deeper learning, and abundance. The Yoga Teacher Conf gives yoga instructors such a space. And in this space, yoga instructors can breathe freely and be guided on their professional journey. The Yoga Teacher Conf not only encourages personal and spiritual growth but it gives teachers valuable knowledge on how to run successful yoga businesses. It educates yoga instructors on different aspects of teaching like verbal cue-ing, hands-on adjustments, and in-depth discussions about anatomy. Created by yoga teachers and experts in their fields, the Yoga Teacher Conf gives you the continuing education that you crave. We didn’t want just another festival, we wanted to give our teachers value, to give them practical tools to elevate themselves, their businesses, and their students. And we wanted to do this at an affordable price. We believe in providing high-quality educational opportunities for our participants. We collaborate with sponsors to make the Yoga Teacher Conf affordable and accessible to yoga teachers from all over the world. To negate bias we pay all our yoga teachers a flat rate per teaching hour, regardless of their experience or following. This enables us to keep the investment low for our conference participants. We chose the theme “Elevate” for our first Yoga Teacher Conf in May 2021. We chose this name because Elevate is an action and it is also a state. By elevating our own thoughts, feelings, and vibrations we inspire that in others. There is strength in numbers and that is true when a community comes together with a common purpose. The Yoga Teacher Conf is an event where teachers can collaborate to elevate themselves and the yoga community. From this space they can then continue to elevate their students. We want you to leave the Yoga Teacher Conf inspired and motivated. We want to provide you a new sense of empowerment and enhanced self-awareness. We want you to achieve your highest good in order to inspire and guide others to find and achieve that in themselves.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have lots of friends visit from out of town and they get a really great balance of outdoor activities, local food & good breweries. We always like to include a trip to the Flatirons in Boulder for some hiking or we head up in the mountains to Frisco for some skiing at Copper Mountain. In the summer, there’s almost always a bike ride around Longmont and maybe a brewery trip on the Hop Trolley! For food, we love to visit Pump House or we often sit on our back patio and grill while watching football or playing yard games. Even with all of the good food and breweries, our friends usually lose weight since we are taking them on so many hikes & bike rides. 😉
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so thankful to all of the yoga teachers who have shared their stories of success and frustration with me and the world at large. I appreciate each yoga teacher who has done the work to create a better world for themselves, their family, their friends and their students. I’m most thankful to the yoga teachers who have trusted me to guide them on their path to personal abundance and freedom. And of course, my husband Sean. He listens to me constantly talk about yoga and supports me in all of the ways that I want to change the world.
