We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was honestly didn’t have a lot of money and was looking to get into something to help make ends meet. I had developed an appreciation for wild rags (western scarves) and decided to invest in a serger machine and some fabric and from there I learned how to sew the wild rags and start selling them on facebook and the business grew and expanded from there. The business grew quickly after posting a few videos of how to tie wild rags and God blessed my efforts and sent lots of customers my way. I also had drawn a lot of horse pictures and eventually turned those into images that I put on a large variety of clothing. This was the niche I needed to help expand the business even further and now we have lots of inventory and a website where people can order from us all year round. I had so much help from so many people from my husband who helped join the business and helped me to grow it to the people who helped me out with supplies. I didn’t realize how important it is to have a good network of people until we really started growing this business. I am very thankful for God putting so many amazing people and customers on my path with this business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our business has some of the most unique products you will find. We feature hand-drawn designs that you wont find anywhere else. We turn these designs into products that you can wear and put on your vehicle. We started with horse designs and are working on a new line of wildlife designs as well as dog and cat designs that will be available starting January 2026. We also do a lot of custom embroidery, apparel printing, signs and banners and vehicle stickers with many business logos. Flat Hat Rags is committed to getting you the highest quality and cleanest embroidery you will find.

We started our business with high quality wild rag scarves and we carry the largest selection out there. Just stop by our booth at the National Western Stock Show and find out. We have a massive wall of wild rags in a variety of sizes and the most pattern choices out there. We carry thousands of prints and have something for everyone.

Every step of growth of our business was a big leap of faith in God. We have encountered many challenges along the way both financially and with other competitors being even downright mean and God has brought us through and found us a way to make the money we needed to keep moving forward. We learned that no matter the opposition from other forces there will be business if we just trust God to bring it to us. One show we even had another competitor demand to have us put our inventory to the back of our booth because they had unreasonably marked up their clothing and God brought us customers that found that inventory and we made more at that show than we had thought possible. When we needed another source of income to build our shop building that we are building then my husband got a job offer out of nowhere to work at Murdock Trailers and that has helped to provide for our shop. Even when I was first starting the business and needed $3000 to finish paying off my first embroidery machine with not even $50 in my account I went to a ranch rodeo in Wyoming with a bunch of wild rags and a freak storm came in that made everyone want to buy wild rags and I made $3700 in selling scarves at that one day rodeo and was able to pay my bills and pay off that machine so God came though even way back then. The biggest lesson I have learned is to lean on God and work hard to take care of the things that we have been given and He will provide the increase.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Colorado I just love the mountains. There are so many fun towns to visit and see including Estes Park where I would definitely tour the Stanley Hotel and get some salt water taffy at the Taffy Shop. There are a ton of fun trails in Rocky Mountain National Park in the summertime and a beautiful display of the Aspen trees in the fall. On the way up the canyon you have to stop in at the Colorado Cherry Company for some Cherry Juice. If you are in Denver, Colorado there are a lot of fun stops and attractions to see. The Molly Brown house is one of my favorites as she was such an interesting person and philanthropist and there is so much history there. The Brown Palace Hotel is a neat place to stay and night in luxury with a historical vibe. If you like Italian food and have a big appetite I would visit Cinzetti’s Italian Buffet. It is the biggest and best buffet out there with something for every taste.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would first and foremost like to acknowledge my husband Zach Taylor as he was so helpful and supportive in helping to grow the business from contributing his own money to help buy more machines to working countless hours without pay just to help our vision go forward. My father has been so supportive in giving us a place to work out of and helping out any way he can as well. My mother has been very helpful in working out my accounting. My friend Cheryl Kilker has been a great friend and helper in giving me tools and helping support us through orders and selling us our big cargo trailer that we use regularly to haul our inventory to shows. I would like to give a shout out to my friends Devin and Jolene Warren with Warren Performance Horses that have been so supportive in sending us business right from the beginning and continuing to support us as their own business grows. My friend Cassandra has also been a great friend and support from feeding animals when we are out of town to selling us our current truck at a huge discount. I want to thank my great customers and friends who have watched and supported our business over the years and finally I could not do anything without God in my life to help guide and direct my steps and send me more business than I could have ever dreamed of.
