We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorian Canty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When the shutdown happened, it was an opportunity for a lot of people to reflect on their goals in life. I didn’t want to work for someone else for the rest of my life and becoming my own boss has always been important to me. Having that free time during quarantine I thought “ if I go for it now I may not have another opportunity “. The last thing I wanted was to regret not perusing my dream.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kavi’s Hibachi Grill is a catering business that specializes in bringing the hibachi experience into the comfort of your own home. What sets us apart from other catering companies is our amazing live entertainment, outstanding customer service, and our ability to bring amazing people together over delicious food. I got to where I am today by staying consistent and not giving up. I can say this journey has not been easy but as Eric Thomas always says “If you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe then you’ll be successful.” One of the lessons I have learned along the way is that if you have enough determination you can teach yourself anything. I taught myself accounting, social media management, and website building. I want the world to know that Kavi’s is more than a hibachi company. Aside from great food, entertainment, and customer service, we focus on experience. We want you to be full, but also enjoy yourself and the company of your friends and family. In a time where gathering has been limited, we can hopefully bring more of these small, positive moments to everyone.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Denver, a few of the restaurants we would go to are: Shells and Sauce, North Italia, and Crown Burger. We would definitely go on a hike at Lookout Mountain and at Devil’s Head Peak. To visit, I would take my best friend to 16th Street Mall, the Denver Art Museum, and to the Alpine Slide. We’d end the day with a delicious bundt cake from Lakai Cakes or a pudding from KJ’s Kitchen Kreations!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my fiancé Marley, thank you for all of your support. Starting a business is not an easy task however having you by my side through this whole process has made it a lot easier. I want to thank you for everything that you have done. Without you I don’t believe we would be here today.
