We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Jen Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Jen, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is absolutely necessary for growth in both life and career. In my life, it was when I jumped in and did what terrified me that I have grown the most. I signed up to volunteer in the Dominican Republic for 5 weeks when I was a freshman in college not knowing anyone and it was the most incredible and enriching experience which has completely shaped who I am today. In business, you have to take risks–big or small- if you want to stand out. For me this started with posting exercise videos on instagram even though I was camera shy and didn’t want keyboard warriors to tear me down. Now I am part owner of a global virtual education business centered around an instagram following of almost 100k people. Our business, Gait Happens, stands in contrast to most conventional interventions for foot and leg pain, this in itself is a risk because we go against the status quo. But having a different perspective is what has given us the opportunity to grow, to prove ourselves, and in turn why people come to us for help.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Gait Happens is a global education company at the forefront of the natural foot function movement. While many professionals are still overprescribing orthotics, injections, etc., we want to teach you how to use all of the beautiful built in potential of your feet, knees, and hips so you can get moving again and reach your goals. Our biggest challenge is trying to get out message out there. When you close your eyes are imagine what a “good shoe” looks like, most people still see a bulky, stiff, orthopedic shoe with a ton of are support. We want you to see a shoe that allows your toes to spread, your feet, to move and for you to feel the ground. This is a very different image. The most important lesson I have learned is that your passion is what inspires change. There have been others before us who have tried to promote this message. I believe what makes us successful is that we let our passion shine through. We care. We care about you, we care about your feet, we want you to make lasting change. When you are passionate about what you have to say, people are much more ready to listen.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question! My favorite part about living here is that we have access to both the city and the mountains at our fingertips. Covid times aside, I would jump on the G line and go to Denver for a ball game or a concert and some great food and drinks. Another day we would head west, go hike Mt Falcon or another not so far trail that takes your breath away, maybe stop at Red Rocks and have lunch in Morrison on the way back. Lastly, I love supporting small so we would go to Old Town Arvada or Downtown Golden to walk around the shops and of course eat and drink some more…. I see a theme here. Some of my favorite shops in Golden are Marrygrams, Blue Moose Trading co, Vital Outdoors, and The Clothes Mine consignment store. Buffalo Rose, Miners Saloon, Table Mountain Inn, and Cafe 13 are some of my favorites for food and drink.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dr. Courtney Conley has been and continues to be hands down the most influential person in my career. She is my mentor, my friend, and now my business partner and I couldn’t be more grateful for all that she has taught me. I would also like to shout out the Golden Chamber of Commerce and especially the Golden Young professionals. Through this organization I have learned so much about developing my business but also have been so inspired by the work ethic and determination of everyone involved. Thank you for being my pack of lions.
