We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Aardema and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what matters most to you?
I value simplicity more than anything else because it leads to a much lighter life. As humans, we‘re naturally drawn to the rich fabric of anything complicated. Constantly being on the lookout for potential “bad” is part of our biology and what kept us alive in the savannah all those years ago. But living this way ends up distracting us from showing up as our best selves and we miss out on the things that matter most. So a few years ago I decided to intentionally get in the habit of simplifying my life by always going “light.” I don’t say go light, lightly. Going light isn’t superficial, it’s one of the most powerful pathways to intentionality there is. Ask yourself, does thinking this thought, feeling this feeling, or taking this action feel light or heavy? If it feels light go with it. But if it feels heavy then it’s unnecessarily complicating and cluttering your life, and that’s where you have work to do. With every decision—what you eat and drink, how you move your body, what time you go to bed, who you hang out with, and how you spend your time and money—you have the power to choose the path of simplicity or the path of complication. And one thing is for sure—you won’t go wrong if you go light.

What should our readers know about your business?
I help women release weight in a really SIMPLE way. Powerful principles of minimalism, simplicity, positive psychology and functional nutrition are woven throughout my work. I’m not naturally a minimalist, but embracing the philosophy of “less, but better” has lightened my life tremendously and correspondingly influenced my coaching. One of the lessons I’ve learned is that as humans we make things so heavy. So in my programs we focus on living light—we stay far away from food protocols that are complicated, complex or rigid. Self-deprivation? That feels heavy and we know it doesn’t work. Counting calories and weighing food? Ugggh…for most of us these are actions that end up cluttering our perspective, slowing our progress and having us join Weight Watchers for LIFE. I’m a board-certified health & wellness coach and a functional medicine certified health coach. I have the certifications, but in every layer of my being, I’ve always been a builder-up-er. That’s my gift. My clients tell me that I see their potential before they do, which is why I have their backs until they can. Becoming a coach has unleashed so much good in my life and in the lives of others. I’ve had the honor of witnessing my clients experience powerful transformations, co-authored chapters of Amazon bestselling books, co-authored a cookbook, hosted The Life Cleanse Summit—my virtual online health summit that inspired thousands to live a lighter life back in September, and I’ve been featured numerous times on popular wellness and minimalism platforms like No Sidebar, Minimalism Life, Becoming Minimalist, Optimal Living Daily, Optimal Health Daily, many online health summits, podcasts and more. I coach women privately and I also have a virtual membership called Living Light for those looking for camaraderie as they let go of the clutter in their lives and lose their extra weight forever. For those who like to go at their own pace, I have a DIY online course called The Live Light Method—which houses my novel and very successful approach to weight loss. My business name is Root of Wellbeing. My personal “root of wellbeing” is to always keep things light and keep on living the dream.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
After a gorgeous hike on the front range, we’d go to JBK! Just Be Kitchen is by far my favorite restaurant – everything on the menu is delicious and the environment is uplifting, airy and light. Whatever the occasion, it’s always just right!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Close to 5 years ago I decided to take a massive risk—one that would not only impact me but my husband Randy and our two young boys as well. I had been working in corporate for two decades and I wanted out. I wanted to trade in my career to become a coach. The work I was doing in corporate was meaningful to my clients, but no longer fulfilling to me. Colleagues told me how lucky I was—I had the title, the salary and the best cube in the row (the one with all the sunlight), yet I still felt empty. Walking away would massively impact our financial stability but I knew that if I didn’t leave and give my dream a chance, I would regret it for the rest of my life. The first 3 years out on my own were rough—I was back in school, studying for the national boards and bringing in very little money. I was under pressure to go back to corporate—both from my husband and at times, myself. At my lowest point, I shared my fears of not “making it” and that it was “just too hard” with my parents. They took it all in, looked at my stressed and sad face, and said, “Heather, don’t quit. You’re too close. Your gifts are going to impact so many but only if you stay this route. You’re a natural coach and always have been since you were young. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy at first, but you’ve got this and we believe in you. We’ve never seen you happier. Just don’t quit.” They knew I had grown beyond the corporate cube and the rampant political drama that stunts so many promising careers. And they saw a rising star who had the passion, energy and desire to lighten the lives of so many. I’m so grateful for my parents’ support which helped me stay the course. And they were right. Less than 2 years after that conversation I’m making more money than I did in Corporate—but more importantly, I’m making a tangible difference in the lives of others by living my passion out loud. There’s nothing more fulfilling to me than helping women living around the world to lose weight by releasing their mental, emotional and physical clutter. I have zero regrets and am living the life I was meant to live, a life that is a perfect fit for me.
