We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaime Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaime, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My brother Juan and I have been working in construction since we were young — it’s
something we learned from our father. When we moved to the U.S., we came with big dreams.
At first, we worked really hard for different companies, learning from each experience. One of
those jobs was in landscaping, and that really stuck with us.
Little by little, we started taking on small jobs on our own. One day, a client offered us a
life-changing opportunity: if we made our company official, she would give us a $20,000
landscaping project. We didn’t hesitate. But we didn’t know how to price a project like that, so I
asked a contractor for help. Unfortunately, he took advantage of us and overcharged. The client
rejected the estimate, and he ended up taking the job for himself. It was a hard lesson.
That’s when we realized we needed to learn — how to price fairly, how to run a business, and
even how to speak the language. We registered our company and named it JC Landscaping
LLC — “JC” for Jaime and Juan. From there, we kept learning, growing, and never gave up.

What should our readers know about your business?
We really take the time to understand our clients’ vision. We don’t just show up and do a job —
we listen, we suggest ideas, and we bring their dreams to life with the experience we’ve gained
over the years. That personal connection, and the trust we build, is what makes people
recommend us again and again.

The most important lesson has been that learning never stops. You have to be willing to grow, to
ask questions, and to face challenges head-on. We’ve made mistakes, but we’ve always
learned from them. And that’s what has helped us get to where we are today.

It definitely hasn’t been easy. In the beginning, we were undercharged for our work because we
didn’t know any better. We didn’t understand contracts or how to protect ourselves. Not
speaking the language made everything even more challenging. But we stayed committed to
growing and learning.
Another big challenge was the personal side — when you’re working so much and pushing to
grow a business, sometimes your family time gets affected. But our families supported us the
whole way. Now, our kids are involved in the company too, and that means a lot to us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
