We had the good fortune of connecting with Janice Sakata-Schultze and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janice, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think my work, which is centered on travel, provides the perfect opportunity for a work-life balance. When travel wasn’t my career, I would have to be more intentional about creating it. But now, while I am learning professionally about a destination and what it has to offer – whether that’s a restaurant, tour, hotel, activity, etc. – I’m also enjoying my experience, which in turn enhances my life. I make time for self-care while traveling, which can involve exercise, journal writing, meditation, or reading..

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
With both my travel agency and my writing, they have been completely solo efforts, but that is the way I prefer it. I can control the direction of my business, and I do not have to consult others on significant decisions. I love that I can design and plan a dream vacation for one person or a group of thirty family members or friends.

I’ve enjoyed learning about cruise lines, tour companies, and different destinations. I think what sets me apart from other travel advisors is that I’m passionate about culinary, wellness and active adventure and try to integrate those specialties into my clients’ itineraries.

Perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned is to be persistent and that every mistake is a learning opportunity, not a setback or a personal indictment of my abilities.

I want everyone to know that travel opens up minds and learning, and my hope is that the world becomes a better place through it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Golden, which is still a small town. I would probably take them to breakfast at Cafe 13, then go for a walk or hike along Clear Creek or one of the Table Mountains. I’d then take them for drinks and a light lunch at Golden Mill, and then we could go shopping along Washington Avenue. I’d then take them to Xicamiti Taqueria, then to a concert at Red Rocks (if it was the season).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out to my husband, Rob, for providing steadfast support through my dual travel careers, both of which are entrepreneurial and have been challenging. I wouldn’t be successful in either without his love and encouragement.
