We had the good fortune of connecting with John Hohnhorst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When it comes to pursuing a music career, I feel this is something you learn to get comfortable with. The first thing I ever did to pursue music, was take a risk. August of 2018, I moved by myself to Colorado so I could pursue music full time. Though yes, it was a very vulnerable and scary move, this also was the best thing I ever did for myself. I learned so much about myself in such a short amount of time. I always tell people, that it’s hard to become something new, when you are around people who remember who you were.

I feel through great risk, comes great reward. As long as you are willing to put the work in and follow with action on the decisions you have made. This reward can come in many forms too. Not only with your career/business but also in your personal development. When you take risks, you either succeed and feel energized or you fall and learn how to pull yourself back up to try again. I see risk as opportunity. Of course, you have to be able to spot when to be risky and when not to be, but I feel the more uncomfortable we allow ourselves to get, the more we can develop our passions and ourselves.

Part of my purpose is to empower those I encounter, so I hope that I can give you the courage to take a risk on yourself. If there is something in your life that makes time seem irrelevant, or makes you feel energized, pursue it. Find a way to make that your everyday job. I believe in you!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say the difference between Black Wolf Sound and other artists is that this is not just about the music. This is a whole mission that I have been developing since 2016. This mission of mine is all centered around personal development. This is why I preach “The Power Of Love Can Change the World”. Of course this means showing love to others but also learning to love yourself. This is a tough process but that is what I hope to help people with, through my music. Of course, there will be some tunes that are made just to dance to, but my music is not aimed just at one type of person. Sometimes we will be high intensity dancing and others will be slow emotional rides through your own internal cosmos. When we learn to love ourselves, there is this crazy phenomenon that takes place. It is one of the most beautiful things to watch. By deciding to dive deeper into oneself, you teach others that they can do the same. I encourage and welcome these kind of interactions at my shows.

I’m sharing all this because this is honestly how I got to where I am today in life and in my career. This is my biggest lesson I want to share with you. When I decided to do some inner work, I would get rewarded in my career. I’m not saying become aware of something and leave it at that. I mean having those heart thumping, hands shaking conversations, you already know you need to have. Take your time and be gentle with yourself as you do this. This is not easy work but I promise your life with drastically change. I believe in you! 🙂

As far as something I’d like you to know about me is this. I am far from perfect. I am not here to stand on a pedestal. I am here to make the pedestal the ground we all share. Of course I will stand on elevated stages so I can see all your beautiful faces but I am no more powerful than any of you. Yes, I am a king, but just as you all are kings and queens. We all are beautiful, powerful beings, who have something to share with the world. The way I share my world is through sound. My music is a representation of my life and all I allow myself to experience. That is why my music will have happy moments, angry moments, sad moments, and everything in-between because that is what I allow life to be. I love you! 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you come to the Denver area, I would have to say you have to do a couple things. You have to get up in the mountains at some point! Even if it’s just a day visit to Red Rocks. A show would be ideal to get that full experience once things get going again. If you aren’t feeling a hike, I would say take a blanket, some snacks, and some tunes to Cheesman Park! I highly recommend getting to a show at The Black Box as well! One of my favorite venues doing amazing things for the underground music world.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I would love to shout out! I’d like to start with my community! I would be NOTHING without the love and support I get on a daily bases! I love my Wolf Pack so much! You all are the fuel to this mission! Every time I get a little more vulnerable with my music, my fans are there showing so much support! I of course must shout out my close friends too! I’ve developed a lot as an artist and as a person because of them! I love you all so much!

As far as those who have helped me grow with music, I’d love to shout out a few collectives! Shout out to Danny Lucia at RestoreLove! We have been able to do some amazing projects together and they really help me stay true to my sound! I’d also like to shout out Elias Pineda and the Subciety team for making me feel at home every time we work together! Excited to continue to build. For my last collective, I gotta shout out Jessica Gomez with FEYK Collective! One of my favorite missions I’ve been so honored to grow and develop with. Constantly inspiring me and making me feel so loved! Please please please go show some love to these beautiful groups!

And I’d like to shout out a couple artists who have helped elevate my actual music and are just some dope people! Please go show some love to the homies Sky Suite and Braxx. I’ve honestly not been one for collaboration and these two have pushed me in ways I can’t really explain. So much love for you both.

Okay, one last shout out! I’d like to shout out my good friend/mentor Jason Hachigian. He has really helped me develop the business/marketing side of my mission and pushed me to believe in myself. I can not thank you enough for that. Love you brother!
