We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliana Knopp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Juliana, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Canine Candy Biscuits started after a trip to the local pet supply store. After looking at the back label of a bag of dog treats, I couldn’t read half the ingredients and these where the “high end” treats costing an arm and a leg. Why?

I worked for a brewery at the time and started looking into repurposing the spent grains for the brewing process. Spent Grains are the base of all beer. The very first step to brewing is the mashing. This is simply steeping the grains to extract all malt enzymes to make your beer. The spent grain is left with tons of protein and amino acids. Most breweries have a farmer to pick up these grains to feed to their livestock. So I did some research and some experimenting in my kitchen.

The benefits are amazing and they seem to never end! Spent Grain is a fantastic source of protein and fiber aiding in digestion while also providing the essential amino acids required for healthy muscle growth and repair. This also boosts energy levels for a more happy and active dog. The phenolic compounds are shown to possess anti-oxidants, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. Instead of using enriched white flour (which is found in many treats now a days), Canine Candy Biscuits uses Organic Coconut Flour instead. Yea, Coconut! While coconut flour is another great fiber source and has many positives when it comes to digestion, it is also loaded with healthy fats. Aiding in metabolism, these healthy fatty acids also destroy bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, dental cavities and cause urinary tract infections. Can it get much better? These little biscuits are literally power bars for your pup!

We also love giving back as much as we can. 10% of all sales are donated to our Rescue of the Season! These hand picked rescues are all located in Colorado.

I created a biscuit with limited and fresh ingredients. Canine Candy Biscuits come in 5 delicious and healthy flavors; Peanut Butter, Sweet Potato, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Mint, and Banana Turmeric. Each bag is made fresh for your pup! I believe it’s about what you feed your dog. Why treat them with crap?

What should our readers know about your business?
I always knew I wanted to be in the beer industry. Fermentation also fascinated me and I was drawn to the work that came with it. I started at a few small breweries around Fort Collins and eventually landed my dream job at Odell Brewing Company. I worked hard to make it from packaging to the cellar. Turning sugar water to the nectar of gods was the dream. Along the way, I learned to seek out the path that make me happiest. It wasn’t easy but nothing is if it’s worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think Colorado living is like nothin else. Hiking is my therapy so getting out to the trails would be a necessity. Lucille’s is a must for breakfast and Music City Hot Chicken would also be on the food list. With so many breweries in Colorado, a brewery hop day would also need to be on the books. I love our Colorado city’s downtown areas. Fort Collins, Loveland, Boulder, Longmont all have amazing areas for some shopping or just walking about.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to make a huge shoutout to my fiancé and partner, Jacob. He has been with me from the start of Canine Candy Biscuits. He has been a fantastic support system and advocate for me. I also want to give some love to my big brute, Titan. Without this big lug, this whole thing would not exist today!
