We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelcie Ottoes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelcie, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
To start with, I’m a copywriter who helps sustainable businesses communicate complex information through relatable stories to create the urgency and agency for action.

A copywriting business isn’t a new thing, it’s been around for a long time. But the moment I learned that someone could make a living writing stories that aren’t books… every lightbulb in the world went off at once in my head.

I enrolled in a copywriting course and learned some of the more traditional copywriting techniques. One activity had us hand-copying really old copy. And, most of it was selling things like diet pills and golf videos.

I realized if I wasn’t incredibly intentional with my choices when it came to who and what I write for, I wasn’t going to feel good about myself at the end of the workday.

For me, copywriting for sustainable businesses is my way to help combat climate change on a bigger level than my own environmental impact, with my most valuable asset… My ability to tell a really great story.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think I was always destined to work for myself because I work incredibly hard. Transitioning to working for myself meant that I got to reap the benefits of all my hard work. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to run Kelcie Ottoes Copywriting.

What sets me apart from other copywriters is my ability to tell a great story. Stories have been foundational pieces of our communities since the dawn of time. And yes, a lot of marketers overlook the opportunities to tell a great story and instead push for conversions and lean into persuasion. I take complex problems or ideas and break them down into smaller processes. Then, I weave a relatable storyline throughout the process. This helps with brand recognition and information retention.

My copy sticks with people. They tell their friends about it. They continue the marketing in a ripple effect long after they’ve read my copy. Which does wonders for any brand to stay top of mind. And is so important for sustainable brands, and in a society where conscious consumers want more information around their purchasing decisions.

Getting here professionally wasn’t easy. I’ve worked a lot of other jobs along the way. I’ve been a social media manager, a community manager, a writing consultant, and a handful of other jobs, too. But when I looked back at all of my jobs, the one thing that I’ve always really loved is writing.

The moment I found copywriting, I knew I had found what I was meant to do. Copywriting was my favorite part of all of my other jobs. It’s the fastest and easiest transition I’ve ever made into a new job, and I could never picture myself going back.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week is a long time! Most people stop by for a quick weekend in Denver. When you fly in on Friday, we’re either headed to Noble Riot or Fish and Beer. Both are located in the historic Rino neighborhood, and both have delicious food. Noble Riot is a fried chicken and champagne spot (what’s not to love) and Fish and Beer has Ahi Tuna Guac that is to die for. Then, we’ll walk around Rino stopping in to grab drinks where we want, or maybe play a round of pool at Gerard’s.

Saturday, we’re waking up early and heading to hike the flatirons. I like keeping it somewhat close because this is a quick trip. After the hike, we’ll head back to the house, maybe play Bocchi ball at one of my favorite parks (like Wash Park or Cheeseman Park) and then head to dinner at El Five. The rooftop is amazing. Plus, we can grab Littleman Ice Cream after, even if the line is a little bit too long.

Sunday, we’ll swing by Red Rocks Ampitheater if you haven’t seen it, grab wings at Fire on the Mountain before your flight, and send you off into the sunset.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be nothing and no one without my community. Whether they’re providing copy edits for a piece I’m excited about, guiding me through a new process, or sending me new clients, my community is the core support of my business. Thank you to Kindra, Lanae, Tara, Kristin, and Lauren. And thank you to my incredible husband, who’s always encouraged and supported my wildest dreams, even when I change my mind.
