We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Bolen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have always been a risk taker. Especially if I set a goal. When my children were small I quit my job as a Corporate Trainer with a large insurance company and decided to open my own daycare so I could raise my children and not rely on someone else to do it. To this day, I can see the expression on my hubby’s face when I told him I had given two weeks notice at my job. But as with all things, I did my homework, I took courses and I had a PLAN with a deadline, And I made it happen. Once my kids were grown and went away to college, I felt a little lost as I had spent most of my adult life raising them and helping my husband with his business. I felt like I no longer had an identity. So after a couple years of trying different things I stumbled across a blogging course that my daughter had suggested. And out of that came Colorado Kelly. Not only it is a creative outlet for me but it is something I am very proud of, My main goal is to be a resource for all women where they know I will give them the best information for travel, recipes, DIYs and more. Hopefully my integrity shines through with all that I do and write about. I truly love helping others.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I can honestly say, I LOVE what I do! I am a very creative person and that creativity was stumped for a while as my priorities were my kids, husband and his business. So when the blog course came along I decided to try my hand at it. I created my blog from the ground up and I was on my way. When I realized it wasn’t as “easy” to make a living blogging as the course implied, I had the financial backing of my husband to hire the pros I needed to make my blog successful. Taking a course alone does not mean you know everything about a subject, I had learned enough to get started, but I wanted Colorado Kelly to be so much more. So I had someone do a re-design on the blog to make it very user and mobile friendly, I have assistance when needed with search engine optimization and any hiccups that come along the way too. What blogging courses never tell you, is it takes a while to get an audience and to be well ranked on Google. However, had I known that, I may have never taken the risk and tried my hand at it. And whether I eventually make a full time living or not, I absolutely love what I do! The joy I get from creating posts and interacting with those that follow my blog is worth the journey I am taking.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My happy place is the Rocky Mountains! Whether it be Vail, Aspen or little old Idaho Springs I would definitely be taking them to the mountains. In Vail, which is where we spend a lot of our down time in the summer, has the most beautiful and majestic views. I feel at peace when walking the Betty Ford Gardens or hiking along the river. It is one place that we go where we truly relax and enjoy ourselves. Also, in the summer Aspen and Vail have the most extraordinary Farmer’s Markets! And both have some of the best shops and restaurants. But my little hometown is fabulous too! We have wonderful restaurants, spas and entertainment galore! We have a mini-incline and wonderful hikes! I now have a paddle board too, so I will be spending lots of free time on the reservoir and anyone who wants to come visit can try it too!
And too the south we have Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods and my favorite place of all the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort! This place is truly a gem nestled in Colorado Springs! With an infinity pool, movie theater, several restaurants, bowling alley, paddle boats, golf, tennis and a world class spa on property you really can’t go wrong by staying here!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. I have an incredible support system in my husband and children. They are my biggest and loudest cheering section. I would have quite many times over if they had not been there to support me and “walk me off the ledge” when I was feeling down or something had not gone as I had planned with my blog. Everyday I give thanks for the wonderful family I have been blessed with,
