Meet Kristen Gonzales | Owner and Member of KCR Copywriting LLC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Work hard and stay steady. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and dejected when clients take another route or you struggle to find business. Everything ebbs and flows, but staying steady on your path and putting in the work every single day will make all the difference.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love being creative, and I’m fortunate that it comes pretty naturally to me with writing. That said, being creative is a process and is exhausting like any other job. I think there is often a misnomer that creativity isn’t difficult and doesn’t require advanced mental preparation. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Writers, painters, photographers, actors, dancers–we all need time to focus on being creative before things start flowing. Perhaps it’s an interview that takes place, and you need to review it for several days to envision where the article will go. It could be a photographer meeting a client, asking for their wants/needs, and then developing a plan of sites and poses that suits them exactly right. Either way, I’ve come so far because I don’t rush the process. If I hit a wall, the dreaded writer’s block, trying to push past it, leads to some abysmal writing on my part. I have to step away and take a break. Deadlines are there, but stepping away can be incredibly beneficial for your creativity. It doesn’t mean I stop thinking about the assignment. In fact, I think more about it as I put away dishes, go for a walk, or chill outside for a few minutes. The writing starts coming into my head, and I let it work there for a bit. Once it flows faster, I know it’s time to sit back down and get to it. It’s a powerful lesson to realize creativity doesn’t come on demand, and intentional breaks are not only necessary but vital to the process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You mean other than the soccer field, where I spend all my time with my kids? 🙂 Two of my best friends just came to visit from Maryland, and we went to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s so gorgeous there, and we had the best time sightseeing, hiking, drinking wine, and exploring the area. As we are all Jazzercise instructors, I took them to Jazzercise Parker to dance. That program has been my lifeline for over 20 years and is the best time ever.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe everything about my KCR Copywriting success to my husband, Sloan. I had to quit my job working for a government contractor when we moved overseas about six years ago. I saw it as a restart, but I struggled to figure out what that could entail. My husband knew I always wanted to be a writer, so he found this copywriting course called Filthy Rich Writer. Intrigued, I decided to take the course and dive into copywriting in 2020. I didn’t know anything about starting my own business, but that course was fantastic and gave me an excellent jumping-off point. Guided by my husband, I worked to get started, and now six years later, I’m well on my way to establishing KCR Copywriting as a powerhouse in the industry. I love writing, and it doesn’t feel like work. Without Sloan, I would have never ventured onto the road less traveled. It’s hard, but so incredibly rewarding.
