We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristie Lowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My journey into esthetics was born out of a deeply personal place. After the passing of my late husband, I felt called to rediscover my purpose and find a way to help others heal and feel better in their own skin. That’s when I found my passion in esthetics. I enrolled at Paul Mitchell The School in Colorado Springs, and from the very beginning, I knew I wanted this to be more than just a career—I wanted it to be a way of making a difference in people’s lives.

Since graduation, I’ve continually pursued advanced education to become the most knowledgeable professional I can be. My goal has never been only about skin transformation, but about helping people feel seen, supported, and cared for. I became a Certified Sensitive Skin Specialist and also earned my Oncology Certification so I can work safely and effectively with clients who are dealing with compromised skin barriers—whether from medical treatments, chronic conditions, or heightened sensitivities.

Ultimately, About Face Esthetics was built from both passion and compassion: a place where clients can experience results-driven care while also finding relief, comfort, and confidence.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
About Face Esthetics is more than just a skincare studio, it’s a safe space where healing, transformation, and confidence come together. What sets me apart is my focus on sensitive and compromised skin barriers, as well as working with communities that often get overlooked in esthetics. I’m oncology certified, a Sensitive Skin Specialist, and I also have training and personal experience in working with those living with PTSD and the neurodiverse community. These clients often face unique challenges when it comes to feeling safe in treatment spaces, and I am proud to provide care that not only delivers results but also creates a sense of comfort, understanding, and respect.

Getting here has been anything but easy. Starting a business after personal loss, while rebuilding my life, meant facing challenges that were both emotional and financial. But every obstacle taught me resilience. I leaned on education, mentorship, and sheer determination to build something that not only supports my family but also impacts my community. Along the way, I’ve learned that authenticity, compassion, and consistency are more powerful than perfection.

What excites me most is how the business continues to grow and evolve. I’ve worked hard to create a streamlined service menu, continue my education, and collaborate with leaders in the industry. Each step is about raising the bar. Not just for myself, but for what clients can expect from professional skincare.

At the end of the day, I want the world to know that About Face Esthetics is built on passion, compassion, and purpose. My story is one of resilience and service, and my brand is about making people feel seen, safe, and beautiful in their own skin—no matter their history, health, or life circumstances.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When family or friends come to town, we love giving them the full Colorado Springs experience. Equal parts food, fun, and community. For great eats, I always start with Denver Biscuit Company for their unbelievable comfort food, or Shuga’s, which has an incredible atmosphere (especially in the evening). Their drinks are amazing, and their bruschetta is absolutely on point.

A must-do day trip is heading up to Manitou Springs. We’ll stop at The Keg for one of the best burgers around, then spend the afternoon wandering through the shops and, of course, hitting up the old-school arcades. Before or after, we’ll always take a drive through Garden of the Gods—it’s breathtaking no matter how many times you’ve seen it, and it’s one of those quintessential Colorado moments you can’t miss.

Closer to home, we like to hang out at The Railyard for great food and live entertainment, and no trip is complete without introducing guests to our veteran family at Whackadoo Brewing—it’s more than just a brewery, it’s a community hub full of camaraderie.

If time allows for a Denver adventure, we always recommend Meow Wolf. It’s an unforgettable immersive art experience that’s part museum, part playground, part mind-bending dreamscape—definitely a must-see.

That mix of food, fun, art, and connection is what makes Colorado special, and sharing it with loved ones always makes it even better.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am incredibly blessed to have a strong support system behind me, both personally and professionally. At home, my husband, Rob Lowers, is my biggest cheerleader. We married after my loss, and he has been the one who constantly pushes me to live life to the fullest and follow my passions without hesitation. His encouragement is what keeps me grounded and motivated to keep growing.

In my professional journey, I owe so much to Kris Campbell, the owner of Hale & Hush Skin Care. Kris has been more than a mentor—she has been a true inspiration. Not only did she believe in me enough to award me a business scholarship, but she also personally sponsored me for the Awaken Esthetics Retreat this year. That retreat, led by the amazing Shawna Rocha, was transformative. Shawna is not only an exceptional educator, but also someone who has helped me deepen my connection to why I do what I do.

These women have continually had faith in me, even in moments when I doubted myself. Their mentorship, love, and encouragement have pushed me to grow as an esthetician and as a leader. Most importantly, they have renewed my passion for helping others, reminding me that this career is not just about skincare, it’s about creating a ripple effect of healing, confidence, and compassion.
