We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Webb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Thats a great story…it was completly on a whim! i had a partnership agreement on my desk for a year that had not gone anywhere apparantly due to one partner not jiving with me. One day our principal Archiect insisted we go to lunch to talk about it and as soon as we sat down, he said that “i would never be a partner as long as he was there.” i promptly got up and left…and went home devistated. i slept on it and went to work the next morning and resigned. i had nothing in order, no work lined up but was going to make a go of it! Six months later, i had four aspiring Architects on my team…one of them is still with me after 26 years!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, not sure i am a “creative” or “firm”. Would like to think we are both sides of those perspectives. As an Architect, we have always approached each project as unique, and about the client and the site which we were given, meaning we have designed a traditional beach house in Martha’s Vineyard, “Yodel” Vail houses as well as modern glass and steel homes. We love to not be pidgeon holed with a “style” per se. A far as business, we focus on a high level of design and service for sure, but we also are really big on setting expectations in advance, spelling out the journey as well as the financial trajectory of the project before we start design. This really helps set our projects up for success before we start designing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Not sure i want to give away my secrets about the Vail Valley where i live, but happy share some thoughts. I love the off the beaten path approach and dodging the crowds so, i am fond of getting out on the mountains or restaurants, if possible, on weekdays when things are a little quieter then using the weekends to catch up with friends and be social. i will add that summer in the mountains is amazing, i honestly hate to leave! My wife and i are foodies, so i love the new Avanti, a sister to the Denver/Boulder locations as a game changer for Apres in Vail. Osaki’s is my favorite for the Japanese dining experience as well as Sweet Basil for lunch! Down Valley, Vin48 as well as Mirabelle and Splendido are our favorites for fine dining and the tastings at Drunken Goat are always wonderful. i could go on about adventures in the area as there are so many, but i leave that to you to seek what appeals to you as overall Colorado is filled with wonderful places that appeal to everyones desires.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow…there are so many! i have one client, that i am not allowed to name, but when i resigned from my prior firm he promptly called me and said that i was not allowed to leave! He promptly sent me a retainer and then shortly thereafter hired me to continue on a large ranch project that went on for five more years. He was the first of several old clients that jumped over to my firm to become my clients and most are still clients and friends to this day…26 years later! i like to think that we are doing things right as roughly 60% of our work is for repeat clients who let us work for them all over the country. i also must say that my wife, Allison is my greatest partner who inspires, coaches and motivates me to be better every day. Last but not least, is my amazing team, who have been with me for an average of 16 years! They are empowered and influential in all of our work and allow me to sleep at night.
