We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Hannan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Fresh from college I started working for a foreign policy think tank, it was a traditional business with traditional structures. After spending a number of years there, I realized that while there were definite benefits (very consistent pay, for example), it wasn’t the right fit for me! I had the opportunity 5 and a half years ago to remake things, and I decided to pursue my two passions (yoga and birth), and combine them into my own business. I have full flexibility, and am able to adjust my schedule around my daughter’s schooling. I’m able to say yes to the things that excite me, and say no to things that aren’t right for me. It can be a scary jump to make, but its been so worth it.
What should our readers know about your business?
Rooted Breath was born from my love of yoga and birth, which are connected at their core by breath. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to pursue both of these passions, offering private yoga classes, studio classes, birth doula services, and partner doula classes. I can offer any of those things individually, but lately have been really enjoying the combination: all of my recent doula clients have added on prenatal yoga classes, and its such a wonderful chance to work together even more. But in whatever capacity I work with people, my goal is always to empower. To help people realize just how much they are capable of, on the mat, in the birthing space, and into the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing about Colorado, is that there is such a good variety of things to do! I love taking tea lovers to Boulder to visit the Celestial Seasonings tea factory, then to Pearl street to window show and grab a bite. I love taking vegan and meat-eating friends alike to Watercourse Foods. Music lovers and outdoor enthusiasts both get a trip to Red Rocks to climb the steps, check out the famous stage, and hike the surrounding trails. Gardeners, like my Mom, head to the Denver Botanic Gardens. There are so many amazing places to see, eat, and explore around here, you can find something for everyone!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I absolutely could not do what I do, the way I do it, without the support of my partner in life – my husband, Travis. My daughter has also been such an amazing source of inspiration. As well as a great group of friends, fellow birthworkers, and yoga teacher: Heather J., Amanda W., James S., Ffion G.-A., Elise G.-A., China T., and Addison W. to name just a few of the amazing network of people I have in my life.
