We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan, Sarah, and Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meghan, Sarah, and Morgan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Meghan – I had just left a small company and knew I liked working on a small team with the flexibility of working from home most days. I wanted to do something creative but knew I didn’t want to do it on my own. I also knew I didn’t want to go back to working in a large corporate environment anytime soon.
Sarah – I was working as a freelance designer during the pandemic and struggled to feel connected with other creatives. All of my client interactions were handled over email or phone, so it got to be a lonely, isolating experience. This business, for me, came out of a desire to create alongside others! As a bonus, it allowed me/us to take on more challenging work and broaden our horizons to different sectors of business.
Morgan – I wanted to utilize the skills and experience I had to reach a broader client pool, working with different organizations and brands who valued the importance of a well branded environment but may not have the in-house staff to bring that value to life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more? Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
Wit.Co is a woman-owned design studio crafting meaningful brands and unique spaces. What sets us apart from other design firms is our ability to connect on a personal level with our clients, and our willingness to do ‘whatever it takes’ to bring a vision to life.
How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Our incredible clients are the reason we have seen success in the first two years of our business. Nothing about growing a small business is easy, and most times we feel overwhelmed with all of the decisions needed to operate and reach our goals. However, we have been so lucky to work with people who trust our vision and understand the power of investing in their brands and spaces.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
We have learned to do the work we are really good at, and hire out or partner on the things outside of our skillset. This goes for our work on commercial interior spaces with contractors, but also hiring experienced professionals to help us run our business (i.e. accountants, lawyers, etc.). A strong team and a well-built foundation has given us so much confidence to put our best foot forward.
We have also learned to charge what we’re worth. In the beginning we wanted to prove our value to our small list of clients, but would find ourselves stretched creatively and severely underpaid. It’s taken time, trial and error to figure out how to convey our value to a client and ask for fair pricing up front. We often need to hype each other up, but it’s always a great reminder that we are doing great work and deserve to make a living from it.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
We want the world to know that it is never too late to start something new and follow a dream! Our stories have been woven together over many years, and we constantly talk about how timing is everything. We have so much to learn from each other and our business but we are excited to continue championing our clients’ goals and creating brands and spaces that inspire and delight.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If there is anything we love, it’s a great cocktail and delicious food. If you were coming to visit, we might take you to Postino for a glass of wine and afternoon snack on their stellar patio. Next, we’d head over to the Weathered Wick and create a beautiful signature scented candle together. We’d cross the street to Lady Jane and ask the bartenders to whip up a drink that inspires them. And finally, dinner has got to be at Wildflower in the Life House hotel. The vibes are immaculate and the food is to die for!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to dedicate this shoutout to our very first client – Storyline Church.
What started as a simple branding project grew to be a long term relationship resulting in the design of their lobby, kids and student spaces, staff areas and more. We are beyond grateful for their trust and patience as we tackled so many business ‘firsts’ while working with them.
We’d also like to shout out to our families, who have supported us in more ways than we can count.
