We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Harrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been creative and felt the need to produce things from raw materials. Preferably things that other people can relate to or express an emotion towards. Weather that be a tattoo, painting, drawing, music, photography. sculpture or any other various form and degree of craftsmanship I found interesting.
There’s something deep within all of us I believe that feels the need to reach out and relate on an existential level.
Life is this weird tangent of emotion, uncertainty and unknowingness and art is a fantastic way to channel the human condition Into something raw, beautiful or connective to others.
Artistry has always kinda just been what I’m relatively good at so it seemed like the logical choice & was my best viable option for making a living while also being as happy and content as one can be.
Art as a career path has come with its array of hurdles and obsticles. Its been 15 years (professionally) in the making and only in the last few years have I been able to sit back and realize I’ve reached my assumption of “success”.
With that same realization came the need to pursue balance. Creating constantly for others can take a tole on your mental health. Especially in today’s world of social media and the constant over saturation of information.
Its healthy for the mind and inspirational process to step back and reevaluate from time to time. Keeping the goal of contentment and happiness at the forefront of your pursuit in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m not quit sure what (if anything ) sets me apart from others. I’ve always tried to have my own flare or niche but am not certain I’ve truly attained that…or ever truly will. We all take inspiration from somewhere weather we are aware of it or not.
Thinking back to my early days vs now I’m most proud of just how far I’ve come artistically and how broad my skill set is. Im excited to see how much further I can push myself and how my art will continue to evolve for however long im alive.
The short answer to how I got were I am today is hard work, dedication and literally no social life. Being a natural night owl and generally seclusive is a huge benefit.
In no way shape or form was it easy. I’ve literally been so broke that all I could afford to eat was 99 cent Ramen for months on end. Had to work multiple jobs a couple of times along the way aswell.
Once I truly hit the grindstone and became established in my area thats when things began to change and the real work commenced.
As with any challenges life will throw at you (and it will throw hard) you have two choices: give up or rise to the challenge.
With time and experience I’ve learned to recognize a challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow as an individual. Weather that growth be artistic, spiritual or physical. The end goal will always be the same. To be better than I was yesterday and to show myself & others love & acceptance along the way.
If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me its that I live with a deep yearning to evolve and learn the lessons my ancestors did not. To leave this place better than when I arrived. To leave behind good emotions and creations that make people wonder, feel or connect. The universe has no victims, only creators.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them into nature.
Spending time in nature alone or with others is a humbling experience. The beauty and mechanisms of the natural world are where I draw the majority of my I inspiration in art and life.
Siting around a camp fire with your closest people conversing about life is to me priceless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends, especially my wife as she has been a huge driving force & guiding light in my success over the last decade.
All of my amazing clients, past or present. Without you I wouldn’t be writing this right now.
Countless other tattooers all over Colorado that I’ve had the privilege to work along side, learn from or be inspired by over the years.
Last but not least everybody who ever had doubts about me or my creative endeavors. You gave me fuel with which I used to push myself into becoming who I am today.
Thank you all!
