We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Bakke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance – what is that? I am working on it! No one ever said that running your own business would be easy. I wasn’t fully prepared for how all-encompassing it would be. As a small business owner, you learn how to do EVERYTHING! I must say that I have never had work more intellectually stimulating, challenging, rewarding and FUN as owning Bloom & Flourish. Loving what you do helps when you work long hours!

What was the thought process behind starting your own business?

I have always wanted to run my own business. I couldn’t ever find the right opportunity in my first career as a medical scientist.
I was inspired by friends who had built successful businesses and started looking for the right opportunity for me.
I love being an entrepreneur. The US is very business friendly, and Coloradans are so supportive of small business. Friends and family cheer you on and I’ve found that people are genuinely happy for your success.

Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?

I am definitely a go-getter. I get a charge from achieving goals that seem impossible at the outset. I am proud of building my business from the ground up.
I was definitely more risk averse when I first launched the business. I have become emboldened by Bloom & Flourish’s success. Now when I approach projects and new lines of business that stretch us a little bit, I think “of course we can do that!”

What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?

Hard work, customer service and striving for perfection. We treat our employees like family and our clients as friends. We set ourselves apart by our commitment to excellence.
We are small enough that I have a direct connection to all our customers. I am deeply invested in the satisfaction of our clients.

Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

When I was a teenager I wanted to be a fashion designer. I made my own clothes and designed clothes for friends. I had a dressmaking business on the side. I guess I always had a creative streak. Funny though, I never really thought of myself that way. My first career was as a medical scientist. I loved it. However, science did sap my creativity. Bloom & Flourish is an opportunity to meld the creative and the scientific. I couldn’t be more thrilled with my mid-life pivot!
I am so grateful for my amazing employees. They are like family and are our most important asset. They make it all happen!
We bring beauty and joy into workplaces and homes. People are so happy to have us around!

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m passionate about plants and the way they beautify our spaces and improve our lives. In 2018 , I saw the need for an interior plant business that had a modern design focus and top-notch customer service. So, Bloom & Flourish was born. At Bloom & Flourish, we design, install and maintain indoor plants and exterior annual flowers. However, we do so much more than plants in pots! Our services have grown to include living walls, moss walls, roof top patios and modern holiday decorating. We are known for our attention to detail and out-of-the-box design.
We have quickly become Colorado’s living wall experts. We install and maintain many living walls including some of the most high-profile living walls in Denver. If you are ever on concourse C at DIA, check out the spectacular living walls at the American Express Centurion Lounge.
In addition to our commercial clientele, we specialize in high-end residential homes providing our clients with incredible plants and planters and the high-touch service they deserve.
Bloom & Flourish has grown like crazy over the last few years. Initially, I ran the business out of my home. We were bursting at the seams! Earlier this year we moved into warehouse and office space in southwest Denver. I don’t know how we ever functioned without it.
Our biggest challenge as we grow will be to maintain the impeccable quality and service that has become our hallmark.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am originally from Australia and moved to Colorado in my early 20’s. Colorado has stunning natural beauty. If friends were visiting from Australia, I would do a day trip to Colorado Springs. First, visiting the Cliff Dwellings at Manitou Springs, driving to the top of Pikes Peak and having lunch at the Flying Bee restaurant at the Broadmoor. We would finish the day watching the setting sun glow off the rocks at Garden of the Gods.

Another great daytrip from Denver is driving to Georgetown and checking out the charming shops. Then driving over Guanella Pass for spectacular Colorado views close to home. It’s a great drive in the fall too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my husband who believed in my vision and helped make Bloom & Flourish a reality. He has taken up the slack around the house so I could devote time to the business. A second shout out to my many mentors, friends and family who have been so encouraging.
