Meet Savannah Merwin | Mental Health & Substance Use Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Savannah Merwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Savannah, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My journey began in Las Vegas, Nevada, though I spent my childhood crisscrossing the country, from Texas and Tennessee to California and Florida. I changed schools eight times, a chaotic rhythm that became my normal. The constant question people ask is if my family was in the military; the truth is, my childhood was defined by a troubled home life. My parents divorced when I was young, and I often felt caught in the crosshairs of their personal struggles.
At 16, I made the difficult decision to leave home. I couch-surfed and worked two jobs to get by, yet I was determined to succeed. I graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA, earning a presidential scholarship to the University of Colorado Boulder. Moving to Boulder was a turning point—I never looked back. I met my husband three days after arriving, and my life began to take a new direction.
My difficult childhood experiences didn’t define me; they fueled me. The trauma I endured sparked a deep passion for mental health. I wanted to understand not just my own story, but the complex challenges facing my family. This led me to pursue a triple major in Sociology, Psychology, and Communication, followed by a Master’s in Social Work. Today, as a therapist, I use my experiences to connect with and empower others who have faced similar challenges. I’m dedicated to helping others navigate their own journeys and find a path forward, just as I did.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My path to where I am today wasn’t easy. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2017, and then my master’s degree in Social Work from Metro State University of Denver in 2020. I spent five years as a home-based clinician at a non-profit, specializing in reunification and trauma therapy for foster children and families. I also worked as a school-based clinician in the Denver Public School District, providing mental health and substance use therapy to students in alternative high schools. These diverse roles strengthened my commitment to supporting those affected by trauma, addiction, and family dysfunction. They weren’t always easy, but they taught me resilience and the importance of meeting people where they are.
My career is rooted in a deep personal belief in the power of healing and growth. As the founder of Savvy Solutions Counseling, I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Addiction Counselor. I specialize in providing compassionate, client-focused therapy for individuals and families dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use. What sets me apart is my approach, which is shaped by my own experiences. I believe that everyone has the capacity to heal, no matter how difficult their past may be. My goal is to walk alongside clients on their journey, offering understanding, guidance, and tools to help them build the life they deserve.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My ideal itinerary for the perfect day in Denver starts with a light rail ride
to the Ballpark neighborhood for a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field. Before the first pitch, we’d grab a delicious hamburger with green chile at the legendary Cherry Cricket—it’s a Denver institution and an absolute must.
After the game, we’d head over to my favorite brewery, Great Divide Brewing, to grab a hazy IPA. The energy of a game day in this city is unmatched. We’d finish the night by heading to Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, a fantastic music venue and restaurant with a unique vibe. This combination of thrilling sports, delicious food, and a vibrant atmosphere is, in my view, what makes Denver such a fun, interesting, and exciting place to be.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success isn’t something I achieved alone; it’s a testament to the incredible support system I’ve been fortunate to have. I want to dedicate my shoutout to the two most important men in my life: my father and my husband. They are my best friends and the anchors that keep me grounded. They have a unique way of helping me find my footing when I start to lose my way, gently pulling me back and reminding me of who I am at my core. Their combined wisdom, humor, and unconditional love have been a source of strength, and I’m eternally grateful for the role they play in my story.
