Meet Trey Newsome | DJ, Radio Personality

We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Newsome and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trey, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Hattiesburg, MS and I was brought up around a multitude of different genres of music that shaped me as a DJ. My mom was big on 70s music, such as, Earth, Wind, & Fire and The Spinners. My dad is a big Southern Soul/Blues fan of Johnnie Taylor and Tyrone Davis. My older sister introduced me to prominent 90s artist growing up, such as, Jodeci & Dru Hill. Finally, both of my grandmothers were big into Gospel. Being around a multitude of music, it helped shape my sound and attitude when it came to combining different sounds and styles.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is that I truly enjoy what I do and it’s my passion to bring joy through music to others. One of the things that I’m most proud of is getting a co-sign from some of the legendary/most known DJs in my area. I got here professionally by staying true to myself and not trying to be like others around me. I always find a way to carve my own lane. It wasn’t easy because I was trying to be like who’s popular but I wasn’t being my authentic self. The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that God will open doors that you did not think you were worthy to enter. Another lesson I’ve learned to know your worth. You may provide everything and more but never undercharge yourself. The biggest thing I want people to know about me as a DJ: I may not be your favorite DJ, but we’re still gonna party until I am.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to a lot of places. One of the first places I would stop at is The Mint Julep Patio for an all over experience. They can enjoy the laid back vibe along with excellent drinks and food. Another place I would take them is Nostalgia Lounge for the best turn-up experience. I would take them to Fairley’s Wings and other downtown spots to enjoy some wings.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my wife, Jamie Newsome, for always believing in me and my vision of doing what I love musically. My parents deserve a shoutout for keeping me and encouraging me to keep pursuing music. S/O to the Brotherhood for connecting all those years ago and watching us go through the growing pains to be where we are today.
