What was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Starting a business is a commitment and requires dedication, resources and sacrifice. We asked some of the rising stars in our community how they thought through the idea of starting their own businesses.

Initially, the plan wasn’t to start my own business. A good friend of mine was growing gorgeous dahlias in Chicago, I saw the photos she posted on Instagram and decided I needed dahlias in my life! I was adjusting to life as a new mom, and trying to find myself again. My pre-kid hobbies weren’t something I could do with my kiddos in tow. So I grabbed a bag of tubers the next time I went to Costco. Only one tuber sprouted, but I was hooked! Read More>>

Starting Four Color Cake came after Elisa Sargent wrote her comic book ‘When Baked Things Attack’. She had developed it with a rich backdrop of characters and windows into other possibilities. That is how Daniel Crosier was able to jump in with the ‘Stanley Kaiju and the Subterranean Bunny Defenders’ by illustrating that book. After strips like ‘For Eugenia, even, as delightfully weird as that was, Elisa and Daniel jumped into their first children’s book together, ‘The Earl of Elm & the Countess of Conifer’. Read More>>

I wasn’t actually planning on creating a business. It sort of just happened. I mean, it started because I created this game, and it was fun and and then we just kept playing. A lot of learning to get from Kickstarter to like a functional business, but now Glue Bunny Games is a business. Read More>>

The pursuit to build my own business and practice began prior to my career as a movement coach and bodyworker. Starting TruSpine & Wellness wasn’t just a career move—it was a calling rooted in my passion to serve and uplift the people in my community. Over the years, I’ve seen how often patients feel like just another number, rushed in and out of offices without truly being seen, heard, or cared for in a meaningful way. That didn’t sit right with me. Read More>>

I opened my studio because I saw a real gap in the way pelvic floor health was being addressed. So many women were either uncomfortable with traditional therapy or didn’t even know there were alternatives. I realized we needed something new—something empowering, approachable, and even enjoyable. Why can’t rehab be fun? I wanted to create a space where women could work on their health in a positive, movement-based, mind-body environment that made them feel strong, supported, and seen. Read More>>

From an early age, I found myself naturally stepping into leadership roles—especially in group settings where I often carried the bulk of the responsibility. It wasn’t just about getting the work done; it was about ensuring it was done well. I realized early on that I had high standards and a strong work ethic, which sometimes clashed with others’ approaches. As I grew older, I came to understand that I thrive in environments where I can take initiative and maintain creative and professional control. Read More>>

Yoga completely changed my life and quite simply I wanted the world to know about it! Once I got deeper into my yoga journey I knew I wanted to teach it and share it with everyone who wanted to know! I have always loved the outdoors, with hunting and fishing being my true passions. Like many, for years I’ve watched outdoor cable tv shows and now internet shows.
