Meet Caroline Butterfield | Owner & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Butterfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caroline, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Honestly, Magnifeye13 is about bringing people together. I think now more than ever, that’s what matters—finding common ground where people can connect and start conversations. My solar lighters aren’t just functional jewelry; they’re conversation pieces. When someone uses one, people around them are usually amazed and curious, which naturally leads to talking and sometimes even learning a little about how solar energy works through magnification. And beyond that, it’s just a cleaner way to enjoy cannabis. No butane, just sunlight and curiosity. It’s fun, it’s intentional, and it gets people talking. As part of a younger generation exploring more sustainable ways of living, I’ve noticed my pendants starting to attract more interest. What began as a luxury niche item is becoming something more universal—something people see not only as cool or unique, but as a practical, everyday tool. That shift is exciting because it means more people are becoming aware of solar energy in a way that’s approachable and useful. If I can help spark that curiosity or inspire even one person to think differently about how we can use solar energy, then I feel like I’m doing something that gives back.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Magnifeye13 is a one-of-a-kind product. It works for cannabis users, outdoor lovers, and even older folks who might rather use a magnifying glass than put on readers to see a menu. I think that versatility is what really sets it apart from most jewelry or cannabis accessories out there.
Right now, I’m super excited about where it’s all going. I just got my first in-house laser engraver, which is a huge deal for me—being able to do custom work in-house is going to take production to the next level. I’m also getting ready for my first industry trade show, which feels like a major moment to finally put Magnifeye out there in front of the right crowd and connect with the right people.
Honestly, this has been a long time coming. I came up with the idea back in 2014, but for years it stayed more of a hobby while I focused on other jobs and paths. It’s been a really slow burn turning it into something legit. I still feel like I’m just getting started, but keeping my vision clear and trusting that this invention has a place in the world has kept me moving forward.
Being an entrepreneur has been a learning curve on the business side of things. There are challenges around every corner, but I’d still rather deal with all of them than work for someone else’s dream.
With Magnifeye13, I wanted to make something that looks good, feels good to wear, and actually serves a purpose. It’s great for lighting a joint, starting a fire, or just showing someone something cool they haven’t seen before. It’s functional and fun, but also built with intention, something that fits into sustainable, creative lifestyles without trying too hard.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Pagosa Springs for a week, I’d make sure they got the full experience. First stop would definitely be the hot springs resort, but if we’re keeping it more low-key, the free hot springs along the river are a great option too. In the summer, floating the San Juan River is a must, so we’d plan a day for that while the water’s still high enough.
We’d definitely head out for a hike, probably up Mill Creek or 4 Mile Road to get into the aspens. I’d bring a hammock, pack some good snacks, smoke a solar bowl, and just hang out listening to music in the aspen groves.
For food, I’d take them to some of my favorite local spots: brunch at Black Bart’s, tacos and drinks at Kip’s, a meal with a view at Riff Raff on the Rio, dinner at Meander, and a nice night out at Alley House. For drinks, we’d hit the Neon Mallard for cocktails, it has a really cool vibe and amazing view of the sunset. If we’re feeling wine and charcuterie, Cork & Board across the street is great.
I’d also throw in a sunrise hot air balloon ride and maybe a paddleboard session on Pagosa Lake. And of course, we’d return to the hot spring resort at least once more to soak and sunbathe

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to my parents. I know it might sound cliché, but they truly gave me the space to grow into myself without the pressure to settle into a job that didn’t bring me joy. That freedom is what ultimately led me to follow my passions and to build this company. I also want to recognize my best friend, John Scanzaroli, and my mentor, Rich Lindblad. They’ve both played crucial roles in helping me create the path I’m on today. John has always believed in me and in this product, and he’s supported me through all the ups and downs of turning this idea into a real business. And Rich, thank you for your guidance and mentorship, for steering me toward growth and success. I’m so grateful to have all of them in my corner, along with my friends and the rest of my family. It takes a team, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
