Meet Cheyenne McKee | Portrait and Branding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyenne McKee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheyenne, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factors behind the success of my business have been the unwavering support of my family, my fiancé, and the incredible networking groups I’m a part of. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
My fiancé has been my biggest supporter behind the scenes. There are many days when I’m out working from 7 or 8 in the morning until 8 at night, and still editing or responding to emails late into the evening. During this season of hustle and growth, he’s taken on so much—keeping up with household tasks, making sure I eat when I get home, and gently reminding me to take care of myself. He encourages me to carve out time for rest and hobbies so I don’t burn out, which is essential when you’re building something from the ground up.
My sister, Lauren, has also played a huge role. She’s always been my cheerleader, pushing me forward when things felt uncertain. She reminds me to step back and breathe when I need to, helping me maintain a healthier work-life balance. Her partner, Joe, is an experienced animal and landscape photographer who’s helped me grow in confidence from the very beginning. He’s coached me through technical challenges and helped me see my potential even when I couldn’t.
On a practical level, the networking groups I’m involved in have been a game changer. The relationships I’ve built with other business owners and entrepreneurs in the community have directly impacted my growth through referrals, bookings, advice, and just ongoing encouragement. I’m especially grateful for HERizon, a group that’s poured so much into me that I eventually joined the leadership board to give back and support others the way they’ve supported me.
The first group I ever joined was PEPNet14—People Empowering People through Networking—and I’m still an active member today. The name couldn’t be more fitting. Every week, I leave our meetings feeling energized and inspired. The people I’ve met through that group have not only supported my business but also introduced me to a wider community that truly wants to see each other succeed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets Photos by Chy apart is the authenticity and intentionality I bring to every shoot, every edit, and every interaction. My style is warm, honest, and real, and that’s exactly how I show up for my clients. I strive to bring out the best version of you in front of the camera while still holding space for who you are at your core. Whether it’s a headshot or a branding session, I want people to see someone they can relate to, connect with, and trust, not someone so polished they feel out of reach.
In a world that glorifies perfection, I believe there’s incredible power in showing up as your authentic self. That’s why I pay attention to every detail—hand placement, hair, posture—but also look at the bigger picture: How will your ideal client perceive this photo? What will they feel when they see it? I don’t just take photos; I tell stories that resonate.
Professionally, I’ve gotten to where I am today largely through networking and community support. The majority of my bookings come from word-of-mouth referrals and relationships I’ve built in Colorado Springs. When I first launched my business, I made it a goal to attend every single networking event I could find, Facebook, Eventbrite, Meetup, you name it, I was there. I filled my calendar and made it a point to show up, even when it was hard. In the beginning, I didn’t know anyone. I was 20 years old, often the youngest person in the room, and frequently one of the only women. It was intimidating. Everyone seemed more experienced, more polished, more everything—but I didn’t let that stop me.
Instead, I made a decision: I wasn’t going to shrink myself just because I felt like I didn’t belong. I was going to earn my seat at the table. I read books like Start with Why by Simon Sinek and The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women by Valerie Young. I rewrote my elevator pitch, got clear on my “why,” and made it a mission to be confident, connected, and unforgettable in every room I walked into. I focused on integrity and reputation, building trust with everyone I met.
Along the way, I’ve had to learn a few tough but necessary lessons. As a woman in business—especially a young one—there were times I made myself small in rooms where I should have taken up space. I’ve had to unlearn what society teaches us: to be quiet, to not outshine others, to tone ourselves down to make others feel comfortable. But I’m done with that. I’m here to take up space, to speak confidently about my work, and to support other women who are doing the same.
I’ve also learned that not everyone will love me or my work, and that’s okay. Constructive feedback is valuable, but not all opinions need to be acted on. I now have a trusted circle of people whose insight I truly value, and outside of that, I’ve learned to say, “Thank you,” and move forward.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is this: Being young isn’t a disadvantage, it’s my superpower. I bring hunger, ambition, and a deep desire to lift others as I climb. I don’t believe in competition rooted in fear. I believe in collaboration, community, and creating space for everyone to succeed. If I’m not the right person to help you rise, I will gladly help you find someone who is.
Photos by Chy is more than just a photography brand. It’s a space where people feel seen, celebrated, and empowered. I’m not perfect, and neither is my photography, but I’m committed to learning, evolving, and showing up with intention every step of the way. That’s what sets me apart. That’s the story behind my success—and it’s just the beginning.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Colorado Springs for a week, I’d make sure they had the best time ever, filled with unique experiences, local gems, and a few personal traditions that I absolutely love.
First stop would definitely be Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs. It’s one of my favorite places, and when I lived in San Diego, I’d visit every year and insist on going there with my sister. I’d take my friend to the Queen’s Parlor for afternoon tea—it’s such a charming, cozy experience and has become a tradition for me. After tea, we’d wander upstairs to the little shop filled with beautiful teapots and teacups. It’s the perfect place to pick out a keepsake.
While we’re in Manitou, we’d have to do the Mineral Springs Walking Tour and taste the water from each of the historic fountains. It’s always a fun (and surprising!) experience, especially for first-timers who aren’t expecting the strong, natural flavors. I’d also take them to one of my favorite spots, The Witches Cauldron, which has an amazing collection of metaphysical, historical, and occult items. Manitou Springs has such a whimsical, eclectic energy that I always find inspiring.
Of course, no trip to Colorado Springs is complete without seeing the classics. We’d hike or drive through Garden of the Gods to take in those breathtaking red rock formations, then grab brunch or drinks at Mother Muff’s in Old Colorado City. Another must is ICONS, a vibrant, inclusive, musical bar downtown where all the bartenders and servers sing! It’s always such a fun time. For a scenic moment, we’d visit Palmer Park, which has some of the best views in the city and is a great spot to just relax and catch the sunset.
At some point during the week, we’d head up to Denver for a day trip. We’d spend the afternoon exploring Meow Wolf, the immersive art experience is out of this world, and then we’d hit the Downtown Aquarium, where we’d grab dinner beside the giant aquarium wall, which is one of my favorite parts! If the timing works out, we’d end the night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a show—there’s nothing quite like live music under the stars in that stunning venue.
All in all, Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas are full of magic, creativity, and adventure. Whether you’re into history, nature, art, or nightlife, there’s something here for everyone, and I love getting to share that with the people I care about.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to the incredible people who have supported, encouraged, and believed in me every step of the way—my family, my fiancé, and the business community around me.
My fiancé has been my rock, constantly showing up for me in ways big and small. My sister reminds me daily that I’m capable of anything I set my mind to, and her partner, who has spent countless hours patiently answering all my questions and helping me grow as a photographer. I’m also deeply grateful to the networking groups I’m a part of. The education, referrals, and support I’ve received from those communities have helped shape my business into what it is today.
I also want to dedicate this to my dad, who passed away in April. He was incredibly proud of me for starting my business at a young age and pursuing photography, a dream he once had for himself. Knowing that I’m carrying a piece of that dream forward means everything to me.
