We had the good fortune of connecting with Kinsey Sarian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kinsey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea of starting my own business was honestly, decided for me. I always wanted to be on Broadway. Four hip surgeries later, I was told by my surgeons and college professors that I needed a new career path. Six months later I was working for a small wedding planning company in NM, and the owner and I decided I would open a branch of her company in Denver once I graduated college. A few months before I planned to leave, she found out she was pregnant. She came to me and said, ” I can’t move to Denver for 6 months to start this with you, and there is no reason for you to do all of the work and my company get all of the credit. So start your own company, and I will coach you through it.” The opportunity fell into my lap. How could I say no?! A few months later she called me and said, “I want to go back to med school. Buy my company!” Before I knew it, Right as Rayne Events had a booked out season and two locations!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Right as Rayne Events is a full service event planning company with locations in Denver, CO, Santa fe, NM, and Houston, TX. We work with every client, from weddings to conferences, to create a custom package to make sure all of their needs are met. Our team runs on a “think tank” atmosphere. We all come from different backgrounds, and have experience in different fields. I think this is a huge advantage, and allows us to bring out of the box ideas to every client. Although there is always a lead in each event, we all work together to come up with the best ideas possible to keep things fresh and make sure every detail is covered.
Over the years, I have mostly struggled with wanting to give my employees as much as possible while still making a good profit. I think that is a very thin line to walk. It is so easy to get greedy and crave financial stability within the company, and to have funds to put towards its growth. On the other hand, I want my employees to love their workplace and feel valued, but if I pay them too much the company would go under and no one has a job. I see this as something I will struggle with throughout my career.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am obsessed with Denver’s Speakeasy scene! There are so many hidden cocktail bars throughout the city that you would never know were there without someone telling you. Some of my favorites are B&GC, Run for the Roses, and William’s and Graham. I can’t list them all, because that would take the fun out of it. You have to do the digging!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to dedicate this story to my employees. I have a team of dedicated and creative event professionals who work so hard to make every event and client experience we put on the best it can be. I cannot be at every event, and I have to trust my team to make difficult decisions and manage all aspects of their events. Without them, Right as Rayne would have closed in our first year. I have full trust in every single one of them, and am filled with joy getting to share our success with a team who is just as invested in Right as Rayne as I am.
